He was in a war-zone, and all he thought about was Jasmin. Truly his only friend since their childhood. She was always a powerful force, and he sucked in some of her energy. It gave him life. In his terminally ill mind, maybe she was the cure.
He crouched behind a bush, breaths too wheezy to be inconspicuous. His hair was mussed up and his angular jaw was set tight.

Kestrel walked along the beach, twirling in slow circles, delicate and bare feet dancing in the soft sand. She wore a strapless, empress-waist, dress the same midnight black as the locks of her long hair. It was flowing and slightly see-through, nothing but a black bathing suit underneath it. She was the same naturally pale color of her sister, same startling blue and wide eyes, but they were opposites in almost every other way.
She wasn't paying attention as she danced and twirled along happily, the fact that Four was a war zone obviously not weighing her spirits down. She was here to help people, putting her limited knowledge of medicine to use. She was drawn out of her thoughts by a wheezing sound which she followed to a bush. Peering behind it, she found a man crouched down. Her head tilted to the side curiously.
"What are you doing back there?" She asked with a gentle smile lighting up her features.

"Dying," He said unpleasantly, holding his hand to his nose. Crimson blood stained his hand. He tried to soothe her, lifting his free hand, "Don't worry, cupcake. I've got a few weeks left." His voice was low and dreary.

Kestrel gasped and covered her mouth, before she moved around the bush to kneel down beside him the sand. "My god. What's wrong?!" She said, her whole demeanor changing in a matter of seconds. Helping people was what she wanted to do and she was determined to him.
"Only a few weeks.. Are you.. terminal?" She asked in confusion.

"Figured you were a little smarter than the average tree." He snarked, blood staining his fingers. He always had hated blood. It made his insides squirm.

Kestrel ignored his snarky remark, ripping a small patch of soft cloth from her black dress. She pulled her water bottle out and damped the cloth. Her gentle fingers moved to pinch his nose gently, moving his hand away from his face, gently using the damp cloth to wipe the blood from his fingers and beneath his nose. She didn't bother waiting for his permission and she wouldn't be easily shooed away. She was very stubborn once she set her mind to something and she'd just set it on helping him.
She wrung out the cloth and then pressed it against his nose, removing her pinched fingers from his nose and placing them gently against the back of his head, showing him to tilt his head forehead rather than backward as was people's first reaction. "Here, like this. That way the blood empties out of your nose instead of draining back up it."

"Oh, God-" His demeanor changed completely. Up until she advised letting his nose drain, he'd worn a scowl. He dropped several shades, mouth pursed and blue. He tilted his head forward, feeling liquid pour out of his nose like a fountain. "My friend - I'm looking for my friend. Her name is Jasmin." He must've been gone awhile, considering the fact Jasmin was the head of a fifth of District 13's soldiers and had a price for her head all around.
"She can help me... she's a soldier. She's a good soldier. Her boyfriend is with her just down the road." Clearly he didn't know about the war. His gaze pin-pointed a house. Wait, how close were they?
The roof was collapsed and a chunk of a table sat propped on the demolished porch. Jasmin's table. Jasmin's house. Jasmin's ruins. "Where is she-" He startled, jerking his head back so violently he stumbled back several feet, bubbles of saliva coating his dry mouth. He spat in the ash-packed ground.
"Is 13 winning? Is she ali - is my friend alive?"

Kestrel watched his expression change with a look of pure concern. She reached out and tried to stead him, her delicate arm wrapping around him. Her expression was concerned and earnest as she looked up at him, brows furrowed.
"Shh, hey, calm down, okay?" She said in a soft and comforting voice. "Focus on your breathing. You need to calm down. I'll help you find whoever you need to, I promise. My name is Kestrel, Kestrel Solstice, I'm a kind of doctor. I'm just here to help everyone I can." She said, hoping to distract him from his apparent panic attack.
"13 isn't winning really... But wait, Jasmin, I've heard that name. She's an officer with 13. She's totally fine, she's alive." She said comfortingly, her hands still clutching the man, hoping to steady and calm him.

"You have a Capitol face. Too pretty. Too well-fed," He said accusingly, but didn't struggle against her hold. The wash of hands across his arms eased him. The gesture was familiar.
The heavy jolt of a gun being taken off safety snapped him to attention. "Get outta' the damn clearing, you dumbasses." A smoking soldier puffed, lowering the gun with disdain. "Aye, J, this kid needs a doctor."
"No doctor." Pike protested, gulping like a fish out of water.
A woman with thin lips pressed around a poorly rolled cigarette and untoned blonde hair stepped out, looking official and full of hellfire. Pike barely recognized her.
She idly took a drag of her cigarette, eyeing the woman with mild irritation before dropping her gaze to the rumpled boy. Her rumpled boy. "Pike!" She spit the cigarette out and caught him by the soldiers. He looked wide-eyed and fearful. "Jasmin, what's going on? Why are you a leader? Where's Felix?" He hid against Kestrel.
This wasn't how it was supposed to be.

Kestrel looked crestfallen at his accusatory tone, hurt almost. She shook her immediately. It was true that she hadn't rebelled but she hadn't gone to the Capitol. She'd stayed put. Her sister needed her. It was just Kestrel and Rowena. Rowena was different, always off in her own head. She needed calm Kestrel to keep her head on. Kestrel had to remind her sister to wear shoes and a jacket when it was cold outside and reminded her to eat. "No.. I'm from Nine..."
Her attention was torn away from Pike by the sound of a gun. She turned, standing in front of the man and eyed the soldier addressing them. She glanced back at the man as he nervously refused a doctor. "I'm a doctor. He's fine with me." She said solidly. She wasn't authoritative and she was gentle but she was also protective of certain people. It seemed Pike had manged to become a certain person.
When she was pushed aside by the fierce eyed girl who grabbed onto Pike's shoulders, she looked in confusion until she realized who it was. The girl he'd been looking for, Jasmin. He seemed scared of her though and so she stayed planted firmly beside him, letting him hide against her. She didn't say anything, just reached over and took his hand with a comforting squeeze. She was completely in over her head and had no idea what was going on but she'd stay til she made sure the man was okay.

"Hey, baby, 'm here," Jasmin leaned in, cupping Pike's face. Her lip curled as she heard hushed laughter from a soldier behind her. "Smoking is forbidden on war-grounds. Back to base before I write you up." She bit back a growl in her tone, throat bobbing with the effort.
Pike's watery gaze floated toward his friend. He squeezed Kestrel's hand out of instinct. "Felix is okay, baby." Her lower lip quivered, and she stomped it with her two front teeth to push back tears. She hadn't seen him in months. Not since he became too ill to come out and fish or trade in the market or catch berries in his mouth like if was an Olympic sport.
She'd never been one to be so gentle, but times had changed. She stroked the side of his face with the back of her palm idly. "Hal told me he misses you." She sniffed, eyeing the doctor with gratitude. "Let me offer y'all two a warm bed tonight."
"I miss him too... tell him that I took a trip when I'm gone, Jazzy. Tell him I'm happy." Pike didn't seem to be babbling. He pulled Jasmin into him, but stayed braced against Kestrel so they were all sandwiched together.

Kestrel was lost. It was a sea of powerful emotions. It was an intimate moment, that much she could tell. She felt like she was an intruder, an overwhelming sense of awkwardness. She should not have been privy to this. The woman's offer was nice and Kestrel smiled, nodding her head. She'd been sleeping at the hospital even though it was overrun with injured patients, mostly just taking naps on a cot in whatever room she could find. A warm room would be nice and she could look Pike over for injuries there.
She loosened her grip on Pike's hand, wanting to give him the option of pushing her away should he need to but he didn't show any sign of letting go. When the girl pulled him into her arms and Pike still didn't move away from Kestrel, she found herself smashed somewhat into the two of them.
She didn't move until they did, wanting to give them all the time they wanted together. She didn't say anything either. She waited until she was addressed politely.

With Pike nestled in her shoulder, whimpering like an anxious puppy, she whispered: "He's the only family I have left." Nobody would be too happy with her bringing in stragglers. Technically, they were meant to be ticketed for breaking curfew. Keeping a strong face wasn't something Jasmin was too worried about around the woman. He caught that they were about to depart and pulled himself in between the two so they could support his languorous movements.
She walked them toward base, clearing her eyes with a few rapid-fire blinks. "Jazzy, why're you so tall now? You look so beautiful. Your arms are beautiful. You look like a warrior." His hand skimmed down her arm, just where her faded-out scars were.
"So are you, baby." She cooed.

Kestrel smiled at the fierce eyed warrior woman, nodding her head. She understood that Pike and the girl were close. She didn't know if they were actually related, but that didn't always mean someone wasn't family. Herself, she only had Rowena. She was glad that the man had someone. She remembered his words. He was dying. He should be with people who loved him.
When they separated, she kept her arm wrapped around Pike, helping to support him. She peeked at the woman, glancing up at Pike. If he had the warrior, he'd be okay, and she wasn't needed.
"Look, I don't want you to get in trouble. I can help you get him somewhere safe and then I'll disappear?" She said softly, smiling up at Pike for a second before turning her smile to the woman.

"All citizens are to be accounted for and brought into custody if they break curfew." She said it blandly, like it came from a handbook. She pushed open the door to the safe house, where two guards - both blonde females - smiled in unison. "Hello, liutenent." The thicker-eyebrowed one greeted nonchalantly.
Jasmin winked at the two as she passed. "They were caught past curfew. I would write them up, but Pike Rosenburg is mentally incapable of following orders and Kestrel merely fulfilled her job as a medic."
None of the other soldiers seemed too concerned by a medic and a half-dead, bloody boy. "Help me get him into the tub." Jasmin hissed so she wouldn't be heard as they slipped into the hallway.
"Warm water, like the ocean on my feet. Sand in my toes. I miss Emerald. I want to see something as beautiful as those eyes before I die." He said like she was a middle school crush.
"Look in the mirror," Jasmin smiled as she urged him into the bathroom. Dirt stained his shirt, and his sweatpants were streaked with grass stains.
She took a deep breath and slid his shirt over his shoulders, bony chest bruised from his misadventures with the cancer making him a klutz.
