Kestrel took comfort in the small gesture Jasmin offered, the small hand on her shoulder bringing her back down to earth. She knew Jasmin was right and she knew that she didn't regret this or anything she'd done with Pike. To have love and lost was better than to never have loved at all, wasn't it? If she could go back and do it all again, she wouldn't change anything. These were some of the best months of her life and now, she'd always have a part of Pike to cherish and love.
Still, it scared her. The thought of raising a father-less child, the thought of losing Pike before he'd even seen their child, it was almost too much for her gentle heart. She nodded her head though, swallowing back the feelings of dread that ran through her at the thought of Pike dying, she brushed away her tears.
"When should I tell him?" She asked finally, blue eyes casting towards the door as though Pike would suddenly walk into the pantry and join them.

Jasmin lifted a shoulder in a shrug. "Wait until he's on his last legs. It'll be somethin' for him to remember on his way out. I've always thought that giving someone something nice to hold on before death makes it easier." She'd seen plenty of death in her days, even at a young age of seventeen. She followed Kestrel's gaze, just as a grinning Pike stepped in through the threshold.
"Hey, ladies. What's going on?" Pike's jaw was slack as he tuned into their expressions.

Kestrel nodded her head slowly, taking in Jasmin's words. It made sense, it'd help Pike's passing to go out on a blissful note. Unconsciously, her hand dropped down to lightly touch her stomach. It was an alien idea that soon it would be round and swollen, Pike's baby kicking around inside her. Still, something nagged at her. If Pike lasted a few months still, she wanted him to know and to go through all the firsts with her. She wanted him to be able to prepare something that she could give their child later, like a letter or something. She'd keep it to herself for now, but she didn't think she'd be able to make it without telling him eventually.
Her jaw nearly dropped when Pike did walk though the door. She should have known. He always came in to grab a snack after fishing. It exhausted him and he was under doctor's orders to eat whenever he was hungry despite the rations most soldiers were given. Kestrel turned and plucked an orange off the shelf, smiling at Jasmin.
"You were right, they were right here. Thanks, don't know how I could have missed those." She lied, not awfully but not at well. She turned and gave a smile to Pike, "Hey, love. I was just getting this for you. You should eat it, they're really good for you."

Jasmin raised her brows, but didn't speak again. She figured Kestrel needed time to fully comprehend the severity of their situation. "Pike-" She sounded surprised, but not all that suspicious. "We just got an order of fresh fruit in. Kestrel forgot where we put the shipment."
"Oh-" Pike didn't look all that excited. Fruit was limp and watery nowadays, much unlike the way it used to be before the war. They'd shipped it from underground gardens in District 13. "Babe, share it with me. You deserve something sweet in your life, with all the work you're doing." He squeezed her arm gently and winked, ducking into the kitchen.

Kestrel shot Jasmin a grateful look, sigh of relief slipping off her lips that Pike believed her. Without Jasmin's calm input, he probably wouldn't have. The gentle smile that fell on her lips didn't have to be forced at all though, as she followed him out to the kitchen. She sat down at the table, tired already. People thought that lethargic was a late trimester symptom but Kestrel knew that it was in the first trimester that women often were the most tired and drained. It was going to be hard to hide some of the symptoms from Pike, but she'd try for now.
She peeled the orange and took half of it in her hands, handing it to him with a smile. "You're silly. I have plenty of sweetness in my life." She purred softly, turning her attention to the orange slice in her hand, popping it between her full red lips happily. She was always happy when Pike was with her.

"As much as I'd enjoy standin' around, watching you two make bedroom eyes at each other, I should head out to check on Jensen." She gave a half-assed attempt at a grin (which appeared more like a grimace) and headed out of the room.
"What would you know about 'bedroom eyes?' You're like twelve." Pike chortled like he was the funniest man in the world. He loved to laugh. He was kidding, of course, as she'd lived, loved, and lost enough for three lifetimes. He always figured it made her smile, thinking of old times where she'd party and try to be grown up.
He turned to Kestrel. "I don't need any of this fruit. You're the sweetest thing in my life." He dropped a kiss to her temple, but his portion of the orange was left untouched.

Kestrel laughed softly at Pike's joke, playfully swatting at his shoulder in a silent "be nice" to him. She smiled back at Jasmin's grimace, waving her delicate fingers in a goodbye to her. She turned her attention back to Pike, smile quickly changing to a slight frown, her brow creasing in concern.
"Pike.." She paused, accepting his kiss and then she picked up his slice of orange and handed it back to him. "Please.. It's got vitamins you need." She stressed, her crystalline eyes gazing up at him, begging, exploiting his weakness for her to get him to eat. As the end grew near, it was clear that it was having an effect on Kestrel. Her skin was paler, her eyes always wide like a deer ready to bolt, with soft blueish bruises beneath them from lack of sleep. Thankfully, the glow of pregnancy hid most of the negative effects from Pike. It was funny how two things she wished to hide helped to conceal each other.
The pregnancy glow was reduced by her stress and her stress was hidden by the pregnancy glow. For the most part, she looked normal.

"There's also vitamins in..." He tried to come up with a good theory to ease her stressed ways, "fish. And the sun! And y'know, looking at you makes me feel like I'll live forever." He wrapped his sinewy arms around her shoulders. "Half an orange ain't gonna make a difference. You eat it. I can't be hogging so much of these rations. Delainey's been living off bread and whiskey for a few days now."

Kestrel laughed softly, pressing a soft kiss to his arm. She didn't want to bring down his high spirits so she didn't say the first thing that popped into her head. But you won't live forever. We both know it. She took another bite out of her orange and then turned her sights back on him.
"Then she can live a bit longer on bread and whiskey, can't she? You're going to eat this if I have to stick you with an IV to do it, mister." He had no idea that soon, she'd need all the vitamins and good food they could spare. She didn't tell him, either, yet anyway.

"I'm not wasting all this good food on myself. I bring in food, not hoard it," He said, his words powerful. He had such an awful temper and sense of pessimism lately. It seemed like a side-effect of dying. He never really reminded himself he was dying. His deteriorating body was reminder enough.

Kestrel wouldn't back down now, though, despite his hard words. She was constantly fighting him, trying to make him better while he only insisted on doing things to make himself worse. It was a constant sense of strain in their relationship.
"Pike, please eat the orange. I've already had my half and if you don't eat yours then it is just going to go bad and wasting food is a far worse crime than eating it." She said, her voice never raising. It was still soft but with an underlying hardness. It was clear this was not one of the times she'd give in to him.

"Goddammit," Pike's shaky fist smashed into the table, sending the orange rolling, "I'm dying either fucking way, Kes." The table trembled from the blow. A female voice, gritty, wavered in from the other room: "Hey," it snarled, "you don't talk to your girlfriend like that." Pike whirled around to sneer something pithy and allover aggressively honest back at her, but, to his dismay, it wasn't Jasmin that was standing, hands-on-hips, in the threshold.
It was Delainey. And it hit him - if Delainey of all people was the voice of reason, how horrible did that make him?
"Sorry." His voice barely reached their ears.
