Kestrel just laughed lightly at his adorably ferocious look, rolling her eyes as she followed Jasmin out into the kitchen. She tilted her head as the mood suddenly changed. The woman seemed upset and her next words confirmed Kestrel's suspicions.
Her full lips tugged down into a frown. "Oh.. What do you mean gone?" She breathed softly, knowing already what it meant. Everyone lost people in this war. Her heart broke for Jasmin and for Pike. It wasn't fair what some people had to endure. "I'm really sorry." She said after a moment, following the woman into the kitchen.

"Gone as in kidnapped an' hijacked beyond repair," She cleared her throat, "I refused to help the Capitol a few years back, so they've been takin' people from me ever since." She shook her head. "Don't apologize. Just don't tell Pike. It'll stress 'im out."
Jasmin seated herself at a poorly built wooden table, grasping a fresh mug of coffee. There were several seated on the table, labeled in different styled lettering by their owners. Most were empty, but there were always a fee unlabeled full ones for any stragglers.
She nursed the cup of coffee between her hands, pinching her mouth together. She took it black, even though stacks of sugar cubes and milk stood in the center of the table. "As you can see, things are hectic here. Nobody's really sleepin', and if they are, not for long. Three people have been attacked, including me." She explained like this was normal dinner-time conversation.

Kestrel felt a heavy sadness weighing her down, nodding her head slowly. She wouldn't say anything to Pike, of course. He didn't need that. He was obviously in the throws of his sickness and he needed rest, a lot of it, and not stress.
She grabbed one of the full, unlabeled, cups of coffee and poured a little sugar and splash of a milk into it. She preferred her coffee with a bit of sweetness to off set the natural bitter taste. She cupped it in her delicate hands, pressing it to her lips and sipping some of the warm liquid.
"I can see that... I'm at your disposable for as long as I'm here. I can help anyone who has been attacked or injured."

Jasmin took a swig of the bitter liquid, the taste turning her stomach. "You'll have two soldiers assigned to you whenever you're out of this house. There's your excuse to stay with Pike." Nobody was within ear-shot, so their plan would roll smoothly.
Most of the soldiers were out chattering away about battle tactics or family or napping. She'd heard them so many times: "if I get out of here, I'm never leaving my wife and kids again." "If I make it, I'm going home and sitting in the shower until all the hot water is gone.."
If. That was all the hope they clung to.

Kestrel nodded, glad that the woman had come up with a plan so she could be close to Pike. Honestly, he shouldn't be out much at this point but she had a feeling like he wouldn't stay down. He'd refuse to give in till the end. The thought of 'the end' caused her heart to ache. She barely knew him but she knew he deserved better. He deserved a real life, a long one. Unfortunately, life was cut short for so many.
"That's a good idea. He needs to be with someone all the time." She paused and gazed down into golden brown liquid, clearing her throat softly before looking back up at Jasmin. "How long exactly is he supposed to have?"

Jasmin bobbed her head politely as the woman spoke. She was a very agreeable sort of woman. Everything she said was well-thought and concise. The opposite of her in most ways. Until she mentioned his time.
They'd always joked and called it his "expiration date." The joke was cold in her heart now. This wasn't fluffy and faraway anymore. The weeks were rolling into days. Days trapped in war.
She opened her mouth, pondering how to answer...
POP POP POP
Gunshots exploded in her ears. She lifted her body, almost freezing. Soldiers had to fight against fight-or-flight responses at all costs. "Go get Pike an' kneel in the bathtub." A bullet whizzed through the window, splattering rainy glass shards everywhere. Jasmin cupped Kestrel's face, startlingly gentle for such a rough spirit. Her calloused thumb turned Kestrel's head toward her. "Take care of him if I don't come back. Get to 13. Surrender yourself there. Save your innocence." She spoke quickly, so fast her emotion couldn't be conveyed through much more than her pinched expression.
"Go!" She lifted the gun from her belt, kneeling by the shattered window, catching her breath as she eyed the shooter every time she felt the focus turn away from the house. They hadn't been heard. She could still get out...

He was relaying the different parallels for each scenario as the first shot bolted him awake. A bullet slammed through the sky light, and he half-crawled toward the bathroom, throat closing in fear. He inched his way into the hallway to find cover, daring to step into the open.
A soldier in full white stepped in from the back exit, and he tore toward the weakened man, slamming him into the wall, cracking the drywall and chipping layers of old paint. He groaned, feeling his teeth rattle inside his head. "Bastard.." He gurgled, trying to erase the taste of copper blood in his mouth. He reached out to try and grasp something, to save his balance...
Then he remembered...
Code Green: terrorism

Kestrel was jolted out of her thoughts by a series of booming sounds. It was a sound she'd become accustomed to since arriving in Four to help people. Her heart immediately jumped in her throat. She didn't run though, as was her first instinct when she first came to Four. Instead, she was able to remain mostly calm now despite the frantic beating of her heart.
She swallowed hard and looked back at Jasmin, the woman pulling her face close to hers. Her voice sounded as if she was from far away but Kestrel still understood her, the woman's voice ringing in her ears. Go!
Pike. The name came to her mind and caused her to find her legs. She jolted up and made a sprint back through the building, remembering her way back to the bedroom she'd left Pike in, only to find him in the hallway already. He was being attacked by a man in white. Kestrel nearly panicked. She had no knowledge of how to fight, she had no weapons, no knife, no gun. Her only advantage was the man hadn't noticed her yet and his attention was still firmly on Pike.
Her eyes landed on the belt of the man in white, tucked into it was a white gun. She was acting on pure instinct when she darted forward and ripped the weapon from the belt. The man turned, startled, just in time to send a backhand at her that sent her flying back into the opposite wall. Her head snapped back against the wall, making her dizzy and she felt warm blood trickling down her lip which was split from the solid hit. None of that mattered though. She'd managed to hang on to the gun.
She raised it at the man and pulled the trigger, the shot ringing in her ears. She watched with wide and horrified eyes as the man dropped to the floor. Oh god, oh god, I just shot someone... She thought, her mind shocked, almost paralyzed. She was only drug out of her thoughts when her wide blue eyes landed on Pike. She stumbled up and wrapped her arm around him, her other hand holding the white gun like it was some kind of disease.
"Oh god, come on." She whispered in a broken voice to him, helping him into the bathroom. She lead him to the tub and lowered him down. "Wait here." She said, shaky voice as she went back to the bathroom door and locked it. She then joined him, sitting opposite him in the tub, pulling her legs up to her chest. She looked at Pike, tears streaking down her cheeks. She'd just killed a man.
"Jasmin sent me. We have to stay here." She whispered to him, a sob escaping her lip. She had just killed someone.

Pike gawked, teeth coated with thick crimson waves. He blinked away from the scene, the pop echoing in his ears. He'd never heard a gunshot like this, so intimately. As Kestrel approached, he attempted not to flinch away from the contact.
He was on the verge of blacking out as she flocked him into the bathroom. He was plopped into the tub, where he wiped his mouth out with a wash rag, coming to his senses as he heard the click of a lock and breathing beside him.
"Is she okay?" He demanded, grabbing her face, cupping it between his soft hands tensely. His breathing was beyond ragged. He slowly leaned their foreheads together, hand slipping from her cheek to fit against the curve of her neck, stroking her hair firmly to keep her grounded. "Feel free to stop me at any time, Kes," He leaned his mouth into hers, hesitating for a beat before he pressed his lips to hers, palming the back of her neck to comfort her.
He hoped his firmness was comforting.
He kept his eyes open, though. He wanted to see what a kiss looked like. He'd always been so passionate, the atmosphere perfect for the mood, his mouth doing all the work, his eyes dancing with mischief...
But this - this was mutual. It was sloppy and unexpected, and his legs were bunched against the rim of the bath tub, the porcelain coolness leaving his limbs aching for relief.
This was his first kiss, in so many ways.

Kestrel was on the verge of falling apart. Her hands clutched at her arms and tears welled up in her big, blue, eyes. Her body shook and trembled, the tears leaking down from her eyes, down her cheeks, and the planes of her gentle face. She wasn't meant for violence. She was meant for helping and healing, not killing. She was on the cusp of a break down, staring straight ahead, towards the bathroom door. Her gaze was blurry though, vision unfocused.
She couldn't find her breath, breathing shallow and fast, not till she felt Pike's hands warm against her skin. Her wide eyes found his face, forcing herself to nod at his question. When she'd left, Jasmin had been fine and she had faith that the feisty warrior would still be fine now.
His hands were warm against her cheeks and she let her eyes close, breathing slowing down subtly. His firm touch was comforting, keeping her mind from returning to the awful act she'd just committed. She kept her eyes closed when she felt his forehead lean against hers, his hand moving from her cheek to her neck, feeling his touch against her long hair.
Still, she didn't realize what was about to happen until his voice sounded soft in her ear. Why would she stop him? The thought was brief and flitting, disappearing completely when his warm lips crashed into hers. She responded instinctively to him, her body desperately melting into the comfort their mutual kiss offered.

For one startlingly long moment, he felt truly powerless. More so than at his weakest physical state. He'd forced away all of his mental barriers, all his idealistic expectations of intimacy being storybook perfect
gone.
Pike at this moment knew one thing for sure: his mouth tasted like blood still. It was faint, but still very there and very uncomfortable in his mind. Almost more uncomfortable than them being hunkered down in a tub with a Capitol girl during a shootout.
His hand trailed from her neck down to the small of her back, gathering her closer, leading the way to keep her focused. He was losing himself to the kiss willingly, and his guide slackened, his hand at her back for support. He kissed her back messily, shaking with chuckles at every second their mouths parted. Smiling almost felt more important than catching his breath.
He pulled away like he was finished, then peppered kisses all around her face: jaw, cheek, between the eyes, and lastly, her lips. Chaste, brief...
And only then did he realize that when they were given the instruction to get in the tub that it meant to hunker down to hide and as a shield for bullets. He inwardly cringed.

Kestrel was completely lost in his touch and his kiss, surrendering herself over to him completely. It was a genuine moment, the both of them hunkered in a porcelain tub, cowering in a bathroom as shots rang out in the near distance, clinging to each other with a mutual need. A mutual need to be anywhere but in that moment, to lose themselves against each other.
There was nothing hungry about the kiss, nothing demanding. It was simply an equal giving and taking between the two of them. When their lips briefly parted, his deep chuckles sounded in her ear, her own giggles responding to his happy sound. A smile in the most unlikely of circumstances graced her features, a private and intimate smile for their private and intimate moment.
When he pulled away, the disappointment she felt was washed away under the shower of his kisses against her skin, ending with just a mere touch to her lips. She couldn't explain the moment they'd just had. She didn't want to.
"Thank you.." She breathed, looking up at him with eyes no longer full of tears. He'd managed to calm her. She wasn't sure why he'd kissed her like that, but she assumed it was simply for the reason of calming her. She didn't dare to think, hope, for anything more than that.

He was almost breathless. Even though it didn't take much to wind him physically, he was worn emotionally too. It was too pure for their situation. "Ya know, Kes, we're supposed to be lying down in case someone shoots through the door," As he spoke, he wound an arm around her, lowering himself onto his back and gathering her with him. Once they were adjusted, he lifted a fistful of her hair gently to his nose and took a whiff.
He wanted to remember every little detail of this moment, including the scent of her hair, the shade of her eyes...

Kestrel smiled at him, everything about her expression gentle. She swallowed past a nervous lump when he pulled her down against him, their current position much too intimate for her to handle. Their circumstances were at odds with their current situation. A dying man and a Capitol medic curled up in a bathtub as gunshots ripped through the space. It was almost too much for her.
She nuzzled her head into the crook of his neck, fingers clutching at the shirt that covered chest, hiding herself against him as he held her close. She didn't say anything to him. She didn't have to.

"Jasmin will keep us safe. Hopefully." He joked tightly, draping an arm over her, his free hand drawing up and down the length of her charcoa hair. All-in-all, it wasn't likely either of them would last long in such a war zone.
He pressed a kiss against the top of her head.

Kestrel nuzzled in close to him, her eyes closing as she felt his hands in her hair. She had no idea what was going on outside of their bathtub but she could still hear guns firing in the distance. "Jasmin will keep us safe, I'm sure. She'll be fine." She said, her voice comforting. It seemed she had finally managed to pull herself together, her mind on Pike and Jasmin instead of the man she'd shot.
It seemed like forever later when the sound of bullets flying through the air finally faded. She sat up slowly and glanced down at him, brow arching in a silent question. She waited a moment longer, to make sure it was really quiet before she stepped out of the bathtub. They had two possibilities waiting for them outside the door. Either 13 military or Capitol. She had an idea to keep them safe if the Capitol had managed to storm the place.
