Pike lifted his head as the world began to spin again, allowing her up before following, still stiff from his injuries.
The door cracked, and instead of Jasmin greeting them, the voice was distressed. Rough. Male. "It's safe," He swallowed hard, a leaking wound stuck on his temple, the probable weapon the butt of a gun.
"Where's Jasmin?" Pike demanded lowly.
"Our commander was taken-" The man could barely get the words out. Without her and with Jay's needed absence, they were in a state of disorder. Pike's jaw hit the floor, and he blinked slowly, conveying disbelief.
"...No. This isn't right," Pike sputtered, "I was supposed to die first! Me! She has a family! I have death... the only family I have..." The color had washed off his face like a tide cresting back from the sand.
It was the man's turn to radiate disbelief, from the set of his wide brows to his lip gnawing on his tongue. The bulk of the man shook his head. "Head back to your assigned quarters. Doctor, you will be tending to our wounded!"

Kestrel watched with wide eyes as a man answered the door, blood leaking down the side of his face. It wasn't anything lethal but she bet it hurt like hell. She swallowed hard, listening to the news with a scrunched face. This wasn't good, she could tell. Jasmin being gone meant more stress on Pike.
She spun around to face him and gently clasped his cheeks in between her hands, forcing him to quiet down and look at her. Her eyes were wide and comforting, her features soft as she stared up at him. "Hey, it's going to be okay. Jasmin will be fine. I promise. We'll figure this out." She said, her voice soft as she tried to comfort him. She turned back to the man then and nodded her head.
"Okay, gather all the injured and put them into the biggest, open room you guys have here. Gather cots, get someone to boil hot water, and gather as many bandages as you." She wasn't sure if they had an infirmity or not but she was sure that it wasn't big enough to house all the injured people regardless. She reached back and grabbed onto Pike's hand gently. "But he comes with me." She wasn't about to leave him alone, especially after the Jasmin news.

The remaining and only mildly injured soldiers took to their new orders and crippled state like worker bees: with stride. They cleared the living room, lying out sleeping bags and splaying out old, musty mattresses. Pike had perched himself on the sofa, ever poised and shaking. He looked like a basket case. But in fact, the crazy was a side effect of dying.
He pulled at the loose strings; so strongly cotton in the form of fluff was exposed from between the haphazard stitching. He'd been helping for several minutes, but he could lead no better than the man second to Jasmin, who was in a daze from a severe concussion.

Kestrel had immediately gone to work, going from the most injured men to the least. Just by looking at some of them, she could tell they were beyond her help. They needed more help than a simple medic could provide. She'd just finished stitching up a majorly wounded leg and she turned to Pike, catching him unraveling his strings. She smiled gently and tilted her head.
"Hey, who is in charge here now?" She asked, walking over to him, desperately trying to clean her fingers of blood. She was sure they were going to be permanently stained the nasty scarlet color. The thought made her stomach turn.

Pike didn't lift his head, only increased the ferocity of his pull on the thread. "The guy who got hit in the head. The one who can barely talk." The concussed one. His mind didn't work that well anymore; simple phrases were dragged on. He pulled his brows together. "Try vinegar for the smell. My ma used to use it to get the smell of fish out of my clothes."
"She's alive, ya know," the soldier who'd been stitched up at his thigh hissed from the spreading ache of his leg, "they want her alive. They took Bates too. They've been lookin' to catch those two for awhile. Probably has something to do with a few weeks ago, an' they both started hollerin' from their rooms. It was awful, man." He said solemnly, blinking like an owl up at Pike. For an 'aw, shucks' type of guy, he was generally very wise. "They'll get out somehow. Bates is a tech nerd. He'll find 'em a way loose. Always happens, man. Always happens."
Pike turned away as the man started coughing. "Thanks." He murmured.

Kestrel felt her heart ache at the nothingness of his expression. Without Jasmin, it seemed he was gone already. She smiled slightly at him and nodded her head, glancing down at her stinking fingers. She rubbed them on towel again, glancing around at the rest of the minor injuries she hadn't treated yet. "Thanks Pike, I'll be sure to try that as soon as I'm finished."
She tilted her head at the man, listening to what he said before she nodded her head in agreement, glancing at Pike. "He's right. I'm sure she'll be back in no time..." She breathed out softly, her hand moving to squeeze his gently. She saw the crimson on them and dropped her hand, just giving him a small smile instead. "I should get back to treating men."

Pike almost clasped hands with her, then remembered the stinking reek of death on her fingers. He looked around the room full of injured. "Women too. Even though mostly none of them were injured." He chipped in. Jasmin had always gotten on him in their younger years for sexism, so it only felt right to speak in her place. The majority of the uninjured men and women were preparing dinner for them all - mostly canned beans and hot dogs, dried fruit, nuts, and squirrel meat.
He tried to smile back, but it trembled so much he just fell back into a placid expression.

Kestrel bobbed her head slightly at his correction. She was using men as a general term, as she'd been taught to do in the military. They didn't use any gender distinctions in the military. If you were a high ranked woman, you were still called sir. That way no one could feel discriminated because of their gender.
She watched him try to smile and she felt her heart break slightly, giving him a slight smile in return. "I'll be done soon." She breathed softly, wishing he could just go back to his room by himself but Kestrel wasn't going to let him out of her sight. She'd promised Jasmin she was going to keep him safe and she was determined to do just that.

He didn't understand military terms. He just thought it'd be chipper to pipe in with something that could be translated as funny. Nothing was really funny anymore. "How old are you, Kestrel?" Pike snapped to attention, gaze raking over the nurse. His eyes pleaded for something, but he never said what. Relief. Sleep. Everything had too big of a price when there were injured soldiers among them.
"I don't want to be without Jasmin," He said suddenly, as if he hadn't spoken before. He'd grown up with her. They'd spent their lives giving to one another. Pike offered fish, Jasmin offered fruit. Pike offered humor, Jasmin honesty. It was give-and-take. It always had been. He wanted to go out with it that way.
Normal.

Kestrel glanced up at him from the blood staining her fingertips, her blue eyes locking onto his pleading ones. She wanted to give him all she could, give him everything he asked for it. It was what he deserved but she couldn't give anymore than she had and that wasn't much.
"I'm 19. I'll be 20 soon." She said softly, barely getting the words out before his next outburst. She winced slightly and sighed. "I'm sorry Pike.. She'll be back for you, I'm sure of it. Everything will work out." She promised him before a man yelled out for her. She spun around and glanced at Pike over her shoulder. "I'll be right back."
Two hours later, Kestrel was finally done treating everyone and she was exhausted. She made her way back to Pike, full lips pulled down slightly in to a frown. "Let's go.. I need to wash my hands." She said, glancing down at her hands and forearms that were colored a crimson color and shaking slightly.

Pike stared quizzically at her tremoring arms. "She'll be back." He said slowly, then stood, following her like a companion animal. "Here - let me wash that off, okay? Blood don't bother me any." He caught her by her upper arm and lead her toward the kitchen sink.

Kestrel didn't pause, just nodding her head instead. She was sure that Jasmin would be back. The woman was a warrior. No way would she be taken so easily. Maybe Kestrel could sneak back to the Capitol base and get some information. It'd be treason but she'd risk it for them. She had no love for the Capitol.
"It doesn't bother me either." She said smoothly, "I'm just tired." Although it was true, it wasn't the whole truth. She'd watched several people die today while she stood unable to help them any further. It'd broken her heart.
She let Pike pull her over to the sink, giving him a slight smile. "Thanks.."

He guided her hands into the sink and ran the water, letting it was all down her hands, draining the blood and residue. He scrubbed at her fingers with the pads on his fingertips. "Get some sleep after....nothing's gonna happen now." He was tempted to weave his fingers through hers.

Kestrel watched as the crimson liquid dropped from her fingers and arms, swirling around the basin of the sink in a sickening display before disappearing down the drain. She gave him a soft smile and nodded.
"You can rest now. I'm sorry you had to wait here with me but I made a promise to Jasmin and I don't want her to beat me up when she gets back." She said quietly, cracking another smile at her joke, watching for one on his face.
She did weave her fingers through his, desperate for a comforting touch after the day she'd had. She was only a field medic. She helped those she could and stablized others before having them transported to a real hospital with medicine and surgeons and doctors. She'd never had to watch people die in front of her, unable to do anything more for them. It wore heavy on her heart.

Pike smiled back. He was still hazy and faraway, and it showed, but being around comfort and intimacy was really helpful. His wide crystallized eyes beamed at her as she made a joke. That was progress, considering he usually didn't catch jokes nowadays. "She'd beat a tree up if it looked at her the wrong way." He joked back, tightly accepting her hand into his. He squeezed hard, drawing her toward the threshold of their shared bedroom.
