It was remarkable that Porter managed to pay any attention to the boy with such a beautiful woman at his side, but he did it. Not to impress, but because he genuinely cared. He knew how to care for kids, he took care of the boys didn't he? Making sure they were okay all these years, and he knew what it was like to be missing a parent- not to mention both. So he got it, and everything else came naturally.
"Round," the man echoed, cupping his hands and twirling them around a puddle of sand, "Well you want to make a base- stack the sand and curve the edges." He had the beginning of the bottom going, leaning back slightly to let the kid work. Porter finally let himself meet Alex's gaze, a grin on his lips as he pet the dog softly.
This was simply great.

Alex really wasn't being much of a help, so she leaned back on the palm of her hands. Watching as the two shaped a sandcastle, the sun warming her skin as she admired the view. Porter definitely wasn't hard to look at, she really couldn't help herself.
"Just let the queen know when my castle is ready." She teases, looking over to Porter and winking.

Rolling his eyes at her remark, Porter chuckled and continued on molding the sand lazily, whispering little tidbits of help to Landon as the boy struggled. It came naturally, and he didn't fight it.
"My queen," he teased some time later, "Your castle is nearly ready."

Landon helped the little he could, mostly he just kept his fingers in the sand. Though Porter was giving him helpful hints. Once it was finished he looked up at Porter with a large proud smile.
"Well, such a gentlemen. That castle is definitely fit for a queen." She laughs, looking at the sand building the two boys had made.
"Mommy, ice cream?" Landon's little voice asked, his gaze shifting to Porter. As if asking him as well. "Sure." Alex agreed standing as she wiped the sand off the back of her Jean shorts.
"Would you care to join?" She asked, trying to hide the hopefulness in her tone.

The grin that passed over the man's stubbly face was something surely of her doing, Alex's simple approve making his heart flutter. Odd, a grown man shouldn't be acting like a tween boy. This was a woman with a son, not a toy- not something he could get involved in and then split, like he'd been doing his past few relationships. Nothing was the same after Coral's death, no girl could make his heart sing- until Alex.
He knew better than to dive in though. Respect and love, something earned and found. It took time, he couldn't rush this, and spending the day with her was perfect for that.
Nodding his head fiercely, Porter stood, patting the sand off him and snagging Duke's leash. His voice soon followed, eyes lingering on the castle then the boy as he replied.
"Ice cream sounds great. After all that hard work in the heat?" He teased, poking Landon's cheek, "We need it."

Landon giggled as Porter poked at him, his dimples sticking out on his round cheeks. Little hand reaching for Porter's free one the way it usually did for Alex's. She was definitely impressed, Landon really took to him.
She'd met guys before most of them hadn't met Landon, she'd never introduce them unless she was serious. Porter was different. After Chris' death she thought she'd never find someone who could make her feel the way he does. Though it scared her, she didn't want to get hurt again. Everyone around her seemed to go, and she didn't want to lose Porter too.
Alex grabbed Landon's other hand, smiling as they walked to the ice cream shop. It felt right having them all here, and today had seemed perfect.
Landon released their hands and joined Duke a feet or so ahead of them. "Thank you." Alex smiled over at Porter.
"He usually doesn't take this well to people, but you've been amazing with him. Thank you really." She says with an appreciative smile, before leaning over and quickly kissing his cheek.

Gathering himself and his pooch, Porter set off with them, his gaze trained on the kid while they walked. A grin was pressed to his lips simply because today was so breathtakingly amazing.
How could it be better?
Well, that was answered quickly. When Landon skipped ahead and Alex's voice purred into his ears, Porter melted- even more so when her lips pressed against his cheek. He knew he was blushing, and did his best to hide it as he slickly replied, "It's no problem really, I'm glad he likes me."

Alex smiled at the blush on Porter's cheek, that was the signal. He liked her too, her heart began to beat a little harder as she looked over at him. Landon giggle and playing with the large pooch, only stopping once they'd reached the ice cream shop. "Vanilla." He looks up at his mom, eyes quickly shifting to Porter.
"That's fine baby." She smiled before leaning down and scooping him up. She let him order as she always did, he loved the simple things in life.
"What kind do you want baby?" A simple slip of the tongue, Alex's cheeks instantly turned bright red.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.
She could not even believe she had called Porter that. A small awkward laugh bubbled off her lips. Free hand running through her hair.

A simple side glance from the girl and he knew he'd been caught. Crap. There was no hiding pink cheeks, it was impossible. Curling his nose at his little defeat, he sighed. Not even he knew exactly how he felt, but there was something. A burn in the pit of his stomach when she was around. An extra beat in his heart when they spoke.
He was adult enough to realize he had a crush on her, but still not sure what it meant. Was it a tiny one or something that'd blossom into more. Porter hadn't dated in years, so this was a bit foreign to him.
Snapping out of his thoughts, he tightened his hold on Duke and stepped up closer behind Alex and Landon just in time to catch her slip. Ah, so it seems they both had a bit of a crush on each other. Well, he wasn't going to let this just slip by, so he rolled with it.
"Oh, babe," he wrapped an arm around her shoulders- not wanting to push it by grabbing her waist, "I'll take chocolate." Smirking, he leaned over and snuck a kiss to her cheek while the little boy was glaring at scoops of icecream. Eyes twinkling daringly, he pulled himself away and acted like nothing happened.
Needless to say, the girl behind the counter was confused.

Landon couldn't even be bothered by the two, he'd gotten his ice cream and began going to town on it. He was in heaven, and Alex was feeling like she was getting there. Porter's arm around her being almost the main cause of that, his lips on her cheek.
At least he was a good sport about it, and it was just another fact to add that he may like her. "Okay sweetie no problem." She teases back, glad they could brush it off. Him moving away left the girl behind the counter questioning them.
Her eyes sparkling as she turned to Landon who was letting Duke lick the ice cream off his face, and giggling as he did. Alex ordered a scoop of cookie dough ice cream, and joined Landon over by a small picnic table. "I want a dog." The little boy almost turned to the couple smiling a rather large grin.
Alex couldn't help but think about their old dog, monkey was a gift from Chris. Her stomach turning as she thought of her deceased family, she missed them of course but she needed to move on. She looked to Porter, a teasing grin on her lips. "That is your fault." She laughs, referring to Landon wanting a dog.

God bless the attention span of Landon, for if he was as curious and snooping as his siblings he'd never hear the end about what he'd done. So he was lucky the boy was too occupied with slurping at the cone to pay attention to what the two adults were doing. He loved that Alex was able to keep the joke rolling rather than cringe at what he'd done, it only made whatever emotion it was in the pit of his stomach flourish.
The quizzical woman behind the counter slowly handed him his ice cream, eyeing him as if he was an alien, but it didn't bother him in the slightest. Slurping at his melting cone, Porter followed Landon over to a table, taking a seat and waiting for Alex to join them. Duke chilled by the boy's side, eagerly lapping his face and panting. Shaking his head, the man laughed, eyes hurriedly meeting the approaching girl, a smirk on his lips as she joined them.
Then the child spoke, and he knew he was in trouble, but he laughed- loudly and playfully. God, he'd known the kid for barely twenty minutes and he was already influencing him. Holding up his hands in defense as Alex accused him, one clutching the cone, he threw on a shocked face and defended himself, "Hey, hey, hey- you know he's been wanting to ask that for a while. I was just the breaking point"

Alex watched as the woman behind the counter gazed at them as if they were insane. Her chocolate cone was handed to her before she turned on her heels and headed towards the two. She was grateful he could actually take the joke, she was afraid things would have been awkward. A warm feeling spread through her body, she liked him. A lot.
Landon smiled at the two adults, hope in his eyes as he let his small sticky fingers run through the dogs fur. "We had a dog, but she ran away." He says referring to monkey. The truth was the dog had been killed by a mutt, but she couldn't tell him that.
"And remember how sad we were, do we want to do that again?" She reminds him softly, a small smile on her lips. That dog reminded her so much of Chris, that was the first thing they shared. Her gaze returned to Porter, a grin on her lips as she studied his face. "Your fault." She teased, she knew the boy wanted another pet, and this large one in front of them didn't help. Landon had finished his cone before he got up and crawled into Alex's lap. It wasn't long before bed drifted off to sleep.
A sigh flew off her lips, the boy was out. She wished she could be carefree like he was, she envied him in that way. "Oh to be this little and have not a care in the world. To be just taken care of, and assured that everything was gonna be okay." She said softly before adding "I'd give anything for that."
