His bags were packed, he was just heading into town to grab a few supplies before heading out into the green luscious woods of seven. He was completely prepared, a survival kit was slung over her shoulder along with a backpack full of equipment. He'd gone camping every summer with his mom when he were a kid, now that she is sick he goes alone. Though he dreads leaving her, fear that he will come back and she will be gone constantly nags him. He promised though, he promised her he'd have fun.
He intended to do so, even though he was going alone. Most of his friends had run off and joined the Capitol army or found their happiness staying in Thirteen like he did. His father was nothing but one photo, that's all he had and that stayed with him at all times. It sat perfectly crisp in his wallet, never to be tampered with.
He quickly made his way through the little store snatching up various food items, only things that could be cooked by fire. He was entirely too excited about this trip.
After being rang out he quickly exited the store, only to bump into a woman as he tried to slow his pace. "Oh man, I'm so sorry ma'am!" He apologizes quickly, his eyes scanning her to make sure she wasn't injured.

This wasn't going as planned. Well, nothing ever really did when it came to Maze, but this was pretty far off course. It was supposed to just be a quick trip to Seven to gather the last few possessions she'd left in her would be home, but of course it hadn't been that simple. No, see, the little bundle of 'joy' sprouting in the pit of her stomach decided that she wasn't in enough pain. With losing her fiance in the worst possible way, just another name added onto the long list of lost and deceased she carried around, on top of having to hand over Airron to the war while taking in Colton, the cousin she never knew she had, and having to care for the teen while he settled into his new life back in Thirteen- her little boy had to pile on complications on top of that. Everything had been moving smoothly. She had collected everything she needed, and was well on her way back to the train station when all of a sudden little Darren decided to play soccer with her kidneys. Wasn't fun, and a blonde had run to her side to play hero.
Maze was fine, really, but they'd visited the hospital anyways to check on the child just in case.
Once she was give the all clear, she rushed out of there and scurried back into town. The train wouldn't be back until the following day, Colton had called her from Three, and she supposed she was meant to head back to empty shell of a home and wait it out until she could finally leave.
Just her luck, as she was on her way through the small town towards the villages and passing the line of shops, a man rushes into her. Luckily, this time she didn't crumple over in pain, but rather just stumbled back a step and sent a glare at the guy. Hand instinctively cupping her stomach, her tone is a tad bitter as she speaks, "I bet you are."
She has every right to be grumpy. Five months pregnant, being forced to spend the night in the house she would have shared with Danny if he hadn't gotten himself killed, and having just spent hours at the hospital only to get bumped into on her way back 'home'. Yeah, she was just a little upset.

Colton felt his cheeks heat up as he realized the woman was obviously pregnant, his features now painted with remorse. "I really am, I honestly didn't mean to. You're not hurt are you?" He asks, his tone filled with concern as he set his bag down on the sidewalk next to him.
Her tone let him know that she was definitely not in the mood to be messed with. He seriously hoped and prayed she was fine, they last thing he needed was her husband or boyfriend coming after him to kill him.
"Is there anything I can do for you, do you want to have a seat?" He asks, offering anything he can to help the snappy woman.

Dangit. Maze knows that she came off rude, and that wasn't fair. It wasn't like he meant to nearly push her over. She blames her haywire hormones because she hasn't been this snappy in ages. Shaking her head with a twinge of regret, her voice softened and she offered him an apologetic smile, "Uh, yeah- no. I'm fine. Not hurt, just cranky. This kid thinks my organs are his to kick around and I get a little bit on edge. Sorry about biting your head off." Tugging her lower lip in between her teeth, she glanced around swiftly, clutching the pack on her shoulder as her free hand roamed mindlessly over her stomach.
"I think sitting is the best option," she said with a quick laugh, shaking her head lazily as her gaze fell to her swollen tummy, "Probably better to wait it out than risk it, you know?" He didn't, and she knew that. It wasn't like he would ever have a baby brewing at the pit of his torso, but still. General gist.
Holding out a hand, seeking his help, she kept her features soft, not wanting to appear cranky at the hopeless boy.

Colton gently grabs her small hand, carefully and slowly he lead her over to a near by bench. "I understand, when my sister was pregnant she was constantly changing her mood. I've learned to adapt, but you had every right to be upset, I should have been watching where I was going." He admits, his hand rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly as he sat next to her.
Hands dug through his pack before coming out with a bottle of water. "I have food too, if you're hungry." He explains, giving her a kind smile. He had almost anything she could need in this bag, he never went camping without being prepared.
"I'm Colton by the way. You should at least know the name of the man that bashed into you." An awkward laugh bubbled off his lips after he spoke.

His touch, contrary to the way he'd barged into her, was soft- comforting as he guided her towards a bench just out of the way of the bustling crowds in town. A smile toying on her lips as he spoke of his sister, she half wondered what it'd be like to deal with someone in her state. She didn't encounter pregnant women often, and when she did, it was at a glance. There were no women who made that much of an impression on her that if they were to get pregnant, that she would have to deal with their mood swings and cravings. No, sadly, she just had to force all of those problems and hassles onto Colton and Airron- before he'd been urged into the war, that is.
Settling easily on the seat, she shook her head at his words and spoke gently, "Nah, don't even worry about it- really. Happens a lot more than you'd think." Giggling softly to herself as she thought back on how much the bump has gotten in the way of day to day life, she glances sideways at the offered water, hesitating just a moment before taking it. Sipping down a small gulp, she turned to face him as she shook her head, brow furrowed, but a grin on her lips as she explains, "No, no. As much as I'd love food, I don't need to be handing over everything you have just because you bumped into me," a devilish glint crossing her bright blue irises, she leaned in some and teased, "Now if you'd made me actually fall, then we'd be talking food." Sending a wink his way as she fell back against the bench, her face quickly batted from playful to dreadful as she rolled her eyes and groaned out, "Colton? Really? How many of you are just going to pop into my life?" Shaking her head with a near silent laugh, she adds, "I just found out that I have a half-cousin with the same name, and he's been nothing but trouble." It wasn't true, just a joke- but she wasn't going back on it.
Smile finding her lips once again, she returned her name, "Name's Maze."

Colton let out a small chuckle, his hand running through his dark hair. "Had you actually fell well, I'd be delievering you food for the rest of your life probably." He teases back, a playful wink shot her way. A grin showing his pearly white teeth as he watched her rest back on the bench.
"Well obviously all Colton's are trouble, you should steer clear of them." he teases once more before repeating her name. "Maze, well I can't say I've had any trouble with anyone with such a cute name." His cheeks warmed up slightly, the girl really was beautiful. He didn't much mind her bubbled out stomach, he mostly focused on her face.
"But I know how family can be, but you gotta love them. Most of the time." A laugh bubbled off his lips as his eyes met the woman beside him.

An easy chuckle fell from her lips, she shook her head with a grin, eyes sparkling with a teasing glint, "Well, that would be welcomed wholeheartedly if that had been the case." There was no stopping the second small laugh that rushed off her lips, memories flooding back one by one- nothing like a dam breaking, but a gentle trickle of stuffed cheeks and frosting tipped noses and the most obnoxious of laughs. It was a calming shower of the past rather than the tsunami of pain and remembrance that she so often suffered when locked in her lonesome. Being in company eased the pain, washed out the thoughts of 'what could been' and 'what had been lost'. It made life bearable. So despite being crowded against a man who had nearly tossed her to the ground, she was grateful for the distraction- even if Darren wasn't too pleased with being stirred around in his little jacuzzi of bodily liquid she'd rather not even think of.
A palm pressed lazily to her protruding bump, she bit her bottom lip to hid her grin, shaking her head softly at his banter. It was weird- how safe she felt with this Colton guy. It was like falling into a familiar embrace, his joking manor and gentle looks welcoming her in a way she couldn't explain, but didn't deny that she could see herself getting used to. "I was never good at staying out of trouble," she returns with a sideways glance, her smile shifting into a smirk with flawless grace, her eyebrows arching at his second remark, "Cute, eh? You just wait." She left it hanging, she was named after the Labyrinth for a reason after all. Filled with tricks, a new world around every corner, and dead end ever present.
The next time she nibbled on her lip, it was out of hesitancy rather than humor. How does one explain that they really don't know what family is like because the only ones not deceased were a slut of a cousin and a boy she just met? Not easily, obviously. Deciding to avoid the topic all together seemed like the best route, so with a soft, "Yeah," and her face turning away from the man, she let her eyes slide shut. Not much to say on the topic, she hoped he let it pass.
But then again- he pushed her once, who says he won't do it again to get her to spill?

Colton couldn't help but feel content in this moment, friends or any company outside his family wasn't really something he has. Just never really finding anyone to click with, Maze on the other hand he seemed to really like. "Well stick with me, I tend to stray away from too much trouble." He jokes softly before realizing the topic of family shut her down.
He didn't want to press the matter, forcing someone to provide information they didn't want to give wasn't something he was interested in. A gently hand rested on her knee, a reassuring smile on his lips. "Come on, I'm suppose to go camping, but since I've already caused too much trouble as it is, I think I'll make it a day trip. I know a beautiful place." He says softly hoping she'd go with him. His hand extended to her as he stood up quickly, a large smile showing his perfectly white teeth.
His worries and trouble shoved to the back of his mind, he hoped he could help her do the same. "I mean unless you have to get back to your boyfriend or something." He adds, remembering she was pregnant. That usually meant there was another man involved somewhere.

A smile tugged at the corner of Maze's lips, crooked and small, but it was the first honest one she'd given in quite some time. There was just something about this man, something safe. She couldn't stop herself from seeing her late husband in his features, in the way his heart was bursting with kindness. In no way was she ready to move on, to leave Danny in the past—especially with her stomach rounded with his presence—but Colton made the weight she was carrying seem lighter. She had no one to talk to like this, no one to chat and joke with. Airron was lost in Four, buried under ash and guns and sweat and her half-cousin was uncharted territory she was hesitant to enter. He was a sweet, but misguided boy. Her first instinct was to mother him, but he'd turned away from that. An newly orphaned teen didn't want someone pretending to be his mom and she knew she could never fill that role, so she didn't know how to act around him. She didn't have her husband to lean on, a best friend to turn to—she didn't have anyone. Breeze was a lost cause. Sky was gone in the wind. Josh had turned a cold shoulder to all of them. Jasmin was leading men and women in the war against the Capitol. Adalyn was missing, leaving Trigger too preoccupied with the hunt for her to amuse a widowed pregnant woman.
She'd lost everyone important to her, and it seemed as though it was because she couldn't stray away from trouble.
What Colton was offering, a chance to swim in safer waters, well that sounded like the best idea she'd heard in quite a long time.
Her eyes dropped to where his palm was pressed carefully over her knee. It was so cautious, so gentle that she couldn't bring herself to push it away. Normally she wasn't one to allow others to so freely lay their hands on her, but his touch wasn't insistent. He wasn't seeking out some odd form of affection or pressuring her into something she wouldn't want—and as a pregnant woman, there wouldn't be much she could do to fight him off. No, it was comforting. He was trying to sooth her frazzled nerves.
She quirked a brow at him as he stood, her mind immediately back-tracking. Maybe he was more trouble than he was worth. It didn't seem safe to head into the woods with a man she didn't know, but he appeared so innocent, but didn't they always? Cautiously, she took his hand and used it to help herself raise off the bench, her other palm quickly pressing to the small of her back to keep herself from falling over. She wasn't used to carrying so much extra weight, it left her with little balance. "Momma always told me not to go anywhere with a stranger," she teased, though her tone held the weight of skepticism, "Especially into the woods all alone." She gave him a long look over, knowing that she had the disadvantage because of his size and her condition, but he didn't know who she was. That she once was the feisty, knife wielding girl who wouldn't hesitate to attack—but Danny had softened her. The little boy inside her has softened her.
Still, she had a knife tucked into her belt loop and it would only take one quick jab and she'd have the upper hand.
Deciding to give him the benefit of the doubt, she began to nod—it wasn't like she had somewhere to be—but then he mentioned a boyfriend. She froze, tense as she stole her hand out of his. "I don't have to get back to anyone," she murmured, and then cursed herself for it. If this guy really wanted to kill her, now he knew that she was alone and vulnerable. Fantastic.
But she couldn't lie. She couldn't pretend Danny would walk around the corner and run into her arms. He was gone and she had to face the fact that she would be raising her son all alone. "He's dead," Maze said a little louder, wanting to prevent him from asking about it. It was easier to get it out of the way now. She wasn't ready to have this heart to heart quite yet. Especially not with some poor man who just wants to go camping.

Colt really hadn't made many friends around here, he was too busy tending to his mother. She'd fallen ill a year ago, she could function but it was very little. She needed supervision, and he was in no financial position to hire someone to look after her. So that left him to look after her, not that he'd ever minded. She had looked after him his whole life, his father ran out on them when he was a baby. He left her with a new born baby and no money, she'd worked her butt off to provide for them. She was always providing and doing everything she could for him. Colt couldn't help but see his mother in this woman, too sweet for her own good. The way the corners of her mouth turned into a smile that was contagious was too precious. He'd only ever really interacted with one other woman aside from his mother. He'd ran into a girl from in four, her dog had gotten out and he help her look for it. The woman was with a child, short chocolate haired little guy. Her name was Adalyn, and he'd thought she was a fairly nice woman. Yet he'd heard about her husband, which he'd never judge anyone but he kept his distance.
Colton was really just alone in life, aside from his mom. He had no one, if anything happened to her he'd be completely alone. He couldn't think like that though, with his mom not working he was working double time. This weekend was his only time to have off, and he wanted nothing more than to spend it out in the woods. The company of a beautiful woman wouldn't be that bad, and she seemed to need the time away just as much as he did.
"Your mom is a smart woman, but we aren’t strangers. I'm Colton, you're Maze. See not strangers." He chirped, his hand still holding hers while his other hand placed itself gently on her back. Such a small girl, with such a large stomach.
Her words hit him like a ton of bricks, the sadness washed over him like a shower. She had no one to go back to? How? How was the world so cruel that it'd leave her to fend for herself? Her boyfriend had died? He had to leave the world before even getting to meet his child? His heart broke for the girl, and the man who'd passed. He'd never met him, but he landed a great girl so obviously he was something special.
"I am so sorry for your loss." Colton spoke softly, he knew saying that was corny but he didn't know how else to express it. Her hand was yanked away from his, had he known that was going on he wouldn't have said anything. She was truly alone, alone to raise a child. He couldn't even begin to imagine the amount of stress she had. Relief slightly took over when she agreed to go, he wanted to do anything to cheer her up. Not that he'd ever be able to take away the sadness she felt from losing her boyfriend. The grief he'd feel if something happened to his mother was something he'd never want to experience. How this girl could function proved that she was the strongest of the strong.
"This place we are going, my mom use to take me here. It's got the clearest water you'll ever see." He explained, trying to lighten the mood. He wanted to give her something to look forward to. His boots thumped lightly on the sidewalk as they walked towards the edge of the district. He was like a kid on Christmas, excitement blossomed up in his stomach. It was the first time he'd ever gone here alone, he prayed silently he didn't get lost. Getting Maze lost in the woods would be one of the worst things he could do. "Boy or girl?" Colton asked, hoping maybe talking about the life growing inside her would make her feel better.
