Maybe Alice would be nearly over Airron by now in different circumstances. But she had nowhere else to go, so she was trapped in district 13, memories of him and the time they'd spent together tainted nearly every crevice of the place. There was also the times that she saw him in the corridors or lunch hall or something, and her heart couldn't help but ache for him. She knew she shouldn't care about him any more but he looked so worse for wear that she couldn't help herself. He was obviously heartbroken and in pain, and she felt mean for thinking it, but she wished he could be heartbroken in a less obvious way. She was managing it, keeping up her appearance and making sure she didn't look to dishevelled before she left her room every day so why couldn't he? It only made her feel bad- but maybe that was the point. She didn't know. She hadn't spoken to him since he'd told her what she did.
Alice was supposed to be going off to four in the next few days, to help the people there who were being put at risk because of the war. For now, though, she was chilling in one of the districts common room-type places. A lot of people had been called to four already, and it was strange seeing 13 so empty, but there she was, alone with only one other person in the room. Usually there'd be at least 4, playing a game or something to pass the time, but not today.

Now we're stressed out. When he said he’d rather live anywhere other than crammed in the spare room at his uncle’s (who wasn’t actually his uncle he’d come to find out, but details, details) tiny shack on the beach, he hadn’t really expected this. Of course he’d always wanted siblings- an older sister who had tons of hot friends he could snoop on at slumber parties or maybe even a little brother who he could protect from bullies and teach to fish and swim. But never had he ever imagined he’d run into a giant of a man and find out he had a douchebag for an older brother. Long story short, he’d been on a trip into town with the man who’d taken him in after his mother’s abrupt death when he was merely five. It was an utterly normal occurrence. Five blocks to the grocery store, his uncle would hit on the clerk, and then they’d take the 'scenic' way back to their little hut of a home- which just meant walking past all the store front and gawking at all the items they could never purchase. Only this time they didn't quite make it all the way home before the shoe dropped. Groceries laced up and down each of their scrawny arms, they whipped around a corner, eager to get back home and get lunch started, when they nearly ran straight into a chest of solid brick. With his head tilted back a good ninety degrees, Colton stared up into a face that mirrored his shockingly. Well, it was aged further and didn't hold any pudge of leftover baby weight, but still. There was no mistaking the similarities. So when the man addressed his uncle with confusion lacing his tone and his brows drawn close with worry, well, they were in for something of a sit down.
Turns out Airron's (and his, weird) father had cheated on his half-brother's mother when he was only four. According to both the man who'd taken care of him and the one who would come to, it was very typical behavior from the father. He had spent more time slaving over a fishing net and slapping around his family than actually supporting them. Maybe it had been for the best that Colton never knew the man, seems the way Airron had been raised hadn't worked too many wonders. After a further in-depth conversation about who Colton was and what had happened in his short life, as well as a brief description about Airron himself and his life back in Thirteen, things had moved rather quickly. War was flooding Four and it wasn't safe, so it was decided that the brothers would catch a train back to the underground District- and boy was that fun. At first they bumped heads, both young and stubborn and just getting used to each other, but give them a week and bam. Best friends. Though, that didn't last long. Soldiers were needed and Airron fit the bill. Colton was shipped into Maze's care, which was admittedly a drag at first- she was pregnant and her husband had just died. A bit of a bummer. But she made sure to be there for him, and he could only do it back. They fit like gloves once their troubles were set aside, and life was once again smooth. And really, Colton was glad to have a break from Airron's 'Alice' rampages. He'd take a weeping widow over his brother's moping state any day. Which brings him to now, in the vacant cafeteria of Thirteen, his new home. Earlier that day, he'd attended Maze's doctor's appointment, and the baby boy was doing well- finally some good news for his cousin. So his mood was light as he shuffled through the line, grabbing whatever food was out and tossing it on his tray. As he spun to face the seating area, he came eye to eye with only one other soul in the room. A pretty blonde who fit the bill of this 'Alice' he heard so much about, but he wasn't sure. With curiosity getting the best of him, he scooted over to where the girl was sitting, a lazy grin on his lips as he sat across from her. Not wanting to jump to any conclusions, Colton settles for a simple ice breaker, "Pretty quiet today, eh?" Words: 725

Alice idely picked at her food, not really enjoying what had been served today. You’d think that with so many people gone they might try and make more effort with the food, as it was easier to cook for smaller numbers, but that hadn’t seemed to have happened. In fact the food actually seemed worse than usual, like the cooks had let themselves and their standards slip now that there was less people about to complain, and that made Alice’s stomach crawl.
She’d just about decided to give up on the food and move on to find something new to do when she heard an unfamiliar voice. She didn’t want to seem rude and just up and leave, especially because she didn’t know the voice and there were quite a few new people who had been turning up in 13 in the past few weeks, so she stayed in her seat and paid no attention to the food in front of her. Instead she looked up and was shocked to see who stood in front of her. He looked like Airron, but not. Like how she’d imagine Airron would have looked 5 or so years ago. It was a really astonishing, yet confusing, sight.

Now we're stressed out. Well, he had predicated maybe a more vocal response, but the shock was equally expected. Cocking his head some as he eyed her up and down (only managing to get about to where he belly button would be before the table halted his view), Colton set his fork down next to the nearly inedible food and rested his chin on his interlocked hands, leaning his weight against his elbows. “Guess that makes you Alice, eh? You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he comments without any real interest, his eyes falling to the mush in front of him as he continued, “Or rather, maybe my brother- and before you get any idea about him being an even bigger douche, no. He wasn’t hiding me from you. He was actually just as surprised as you are when he saw me. Daddy couldn’t keep it in his pants- guess that means it’s hereditary, hm?” By now, he was just reciting an old tale. So many people were curious as to why Airron was suddenly sauntering around with a mini-me, and well, he felt obligated to tell. It was a routine now, something he did nearly daily when he got a bewildered glance thrown his way. Biting his lip, his brow drew down with confusion as he batted his gaze back to the girl he presumed was his brother’s beloved ex and asked, “You don’t talk much, do you? Or is it just the shock. Maybe both? I feel like Airron would date someone quiet so he could talk more, I mean, he doesn’t shut up about you now, so he must have talked a lot to you then.” There was a good chance that blabber-mouth ran in the family as well, because Colton talked like he was a fountain spitting water. Sharpening his gaze on her, his lips fell in a purse, wondering if she was even capable of speech at this point. Words: 321

Alice was quite confused to say the least, and the boys explanation didn’t help clear anything up for her, really. So Airron had a little brother, or half brother, she assumed from what she’d been told- and that was news to her. Big news. But she hadn’t managed to get onto thinking that Airron had been hiding him from her before the boy had cleared up the fact that not even he had known about the young boy since recently. She couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow slightly at the boy, he seemed to basically oozed confidence as he spoke, and Alice couldn’t help wondering if that was just something that came from living in 4 your whole life- a weird confidence- almost making the person in question seem cocky. Or maybe it was just that 8 brought create shy, quiet people like Alice, and most people were more like Airron and his little brother- she hadn’t really experienced people from other districts since moving to 13. There was a lot of information that had been bombarded at her in less than a minute, so obviously Alice was going to be quiet as she tried to process it all, but that didn’t stop the young boy from talking about how little she spoke, which annoyed her, actually. She wished she could think of something mildly rude and a little funny to say back to him, but alas, that wasn’t how her mind worked, and all she could get out was “Um… Both? Quiet and shocked. What was your name, by the way?” She asked, completely skipping over the fact that he had brought up her and Airron’s relationship, or that Airron was still talking about her a lot. She made a mental note of it, though, and knew she would end up thinking about it a lot later on whether she wanted to or not.

Now we're stressed out. He got it, really. He could be a dick, seemed to be a family trait, and he knew what he had said had been rather insensitive, but where the other Tide’s would have skipped over an apology, well, he simply couldn’t. Looking down at his hands as he fiddled with the edge of his tray, he listened to her speak and nodded solemnly. He’d been eager to pursue his hunch, wanting to know more about this girl his brother talked so much about- so he’d over spoken and assumed too much. Rude on his end, and he was only now registering how that must have made him come off. Breathing in softly, he glanced back up at her with a sheepish smile and more shyly offered, “I’m Colton,” only pausing a moment to sit up straighter to offer, “And I’m sorry for what I said. I just- Airron talks about you so much and it was just kind of awesome to finally get to see what the buzz was about. I was rude.” Nibbling at his bottom lip, the teen tried to smooth over the feathers he had ruffled, “If it makes you uncomfortable, I won’t talk anymore about Airron. I didn’t come over here to bother you or scope you out for him. Just because I was,” he halted for a second, eyes batting back and forth as he seeming searched for the right word, “I was curious, I guess.” Shrugging lazily, as if it wasn’t any big deal that he had just made a disaster of an introduction to the only lover his brother seemed to care about, Colton set it to blaming his teenage eagerness. He didn’t think things over, and well, it showed. He spoke before his brain could process what a mess he was making. An easy smile hanging lazily on his lips, he offered, “I have some snacks back in my room. I mean, I share a room with Airron and that’d probably be awkward, but it’s better than this garbage?” He was unsure of himself, not really certain what he wanted out of this interaction, but determined to not come off as a dick- there were already enough of those in her life, it seemed. But what did he know.

Alice sighed lightly, the mention of Airron admittedly putting a downer on her mood. She hadn't even started her meal in that great of a mood, and now she felt even worse. Great. She picked up her fork and began pushing the food around her plate, looking away from Colton and down at what she was doing instead. "It's fine, i guess" Alice replied to his apology, even if she wasn't sure if she meant it. Sure, she was annoyed that Airron had got brought up as it was obviously going to be a touchy subject, but Colton was young, and only had one side of the story, and didn't know Alice at all, so he wouldn't know how his words would actually make her feel. She may as well forgive him. "Just, like, chill with the curiosity, okay? I'm really not the interesting. There's not much to know" She added, glancing up at him.
She perked up slightly at the mention of free, edible food, the idea of snacks re-enforcing the possible apology she'd just given the young boy. Maybe it would be a bit awkward, since Colton was Airron's brother- well, half brother, but whatever- and she'd be in Airron's room, but last thing she'd heard he was one of the people who had been sent off to 4 recently (she totally hadn't been snooping on him), so it shouldn't be too bad. "Sure" She said, setting down her fork and pushing the tray away from her slightly. "I'm sure i'll be able to manage. Anything's better then this crap"

Now we're stressed out. "Great, yeah," Colton mumbled, fingers fumbling with his too long sleeves as his eyes darted from the girl before him to the table below as he nodded, "I can cut back on the questions. Well, try. No promises, it's just," his gaze is skittish, suddenly so unsure of himself, not comfortable in his skin after the offer he'd made. What would Airron think? His little brother bringing his ex-girlfriend back to his room while he was away at war, fighting for their safety? Would he feel betrayed? Or would he be grateful that he'd been able to break through to the girl? That Airron may stand a chance at winning her back if she'd let Colton in? Or he could just not tell his brother about it, that works too. "You know, it's all new, and you're just," he cut himself off, not allowing himself to blabber on more about how she was all Airron talked about, how she was really the only thing he'd learned about while here, "Nevermind." Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, he sighed, lips pursed as he debated his next words- setting himself up to take her denial. Surely she didn't want to spend the afternoon with the kid brother of her sleazy ex. But apparently, she did? Hm. Well, he'd take what he could get. Feet tapping the ground hesitantly, he wasn't sure if he should rise or not- really not sure if she wanted to go right this second, or if she preferred to laze around for a moment to psych herself up to going back to that room. Inching his tray away with a quick push of his fingers, he decided to stand, distracting the motion with a swipe of his palms down his torso- smoothing his shirt down to give her a moment. "I have some chips I snatched on the way here, a pretty big bag from Nine- some cookies too, still fresh and all." He tossed her an easy grin, trying to come off more sure than he was. Maybe he wasn't as much like Airron as everyone thought.

Alice hadn’t meant to make the boy feel bad or self conscious or anything like that by asking him to stop asking her questions about Airron, but apparently she had, and she couldn’t help but feel bad about that. Still, she had to force herself not to feel bad about it, as she was trying to make sure she wasn’t just a doormat that people could walk all over anymore, and the questions about her (arsehole) ex were making her uncomftoable- so why should she have to put up with that? Short answer- she shouldn’t.
She looked at Colton again and took in how much he really did look like a younger Airron- the similarities were almost creepy, especially for step brothers. It almost seemed like Colton had inherited none of his mother's looks and only had the Tide look about him. It was then, thinking about that, that Alice realised why she could actually bare to talk to Colton; he was so different to Airron personalities. If Colton had walked over to her with all of Airron’s charm and confidence Alice probably would have thrown her ‘food’ in his face and stormed off, but, thankfully, it seemed that cockiness wasn’t a trait that all Tide’s shared, unlike good looks, and Alice was glad, because she was starving and could really do with these snacks he was offering. If she’d had to throw her food in his face she never would have been offered actual, edible food.
She couldn’t help but smile widely at the mention of cookies- they had always been some of her favourite things, but she’d hardly been able to get any since she left 8. She didn’t know if he wanted to leave now or not, and he also seemed to be confused about when to leave, so for once she was the one who made the decision. “Do you wanna go, then?”
