Jared nodded solemnly, squeezing her hand back when she took it. He pulled his hand back and shoved both of them in his pockets, following her eyes around the room at the various tributes who were fighting and training. He could see just from looking around the room that the Careers were extremely well-trained this year. "For what it's worth, I don't want you dead." He said, giving her a smile and a wink.

Myia let her hands return to the medicine table in front of them, just making them busy doing something while the two of them talked. She laughed softly and smiled up at him. "I don't want you dead either. But I wouldn't hold your breath on me. I'm going to be hopeless in the arena." She said truthfully. There was no self pity or sadness in her voice. She'd just accepted that that's how it was going to be.
She paused for a moment, glancing up at him with a smile. "But you're from Seven. You know how to swing an ax. I could help you get home."

"Not if I have anything to do with that, you won't be. Forget me, I'd have no chance." Jared just shook his head. Like Myia, he'd accepted his fate the moment his name was drawn from the glass bowl. Just because he was from seven and could swing a heavy weapon around, it didn't mean he could breeze through it and return home at the end of it. There were people in the room with them who had probably been trained from a ridiculously young age; people who could take him out in a heartbeat. Just looking around he saw two guys around his age fighting each other with swords, and one of them already had a bandage on their arm. He even saw what looked like a thirteen year old girl splitting an arrow directly down the middle of her previous one. He had no chance. "Let's just say we'll help each other." He settled, holding out his hand for her to shake.

Myia listened to him, her eyes casting about the room once more, landing on deadly tribute after deadly tribute. She didn't know how she'd ever survive being stuck in the Games with people like these. It seemed Jared would be her only hope of getting home alive and she knew she'd do everything she could to help him get back to his family.
She reached out and shook his hand with a smile on her lips. "Alright. In that case, I wanna show you one more thing." She turned back to the medicine table, positioning herself so no one could see what she was doing. She grabbed the twig of Nightlock she'd showed him and plucked a few berries off, putting them into a new bowl. She then reached for another plant with clusters of little red berries clumped closely together. She plucked about ten off carefully and dropped them in with the Nightlock. She talked as she went. "It's a poisonous plant called Wolfs Bane. It's low to the ground, waxy leaves, red berries like you saw. It's about as common as Nightlock." She gently crushed the berries and then mixed the juices together. "Put this on your weapon and anyone you even Nic with your blade is going to die quickly." She told him in a low and soft voice, glancing up at him. She hoped he understood that she was showing him she trusted him by giving him information he could use against her. She then quickly threw the bowl away and cleaned up so no one else could guess the deadly cocktail she'd made.

Jared listened, seeing her position herself in a defensive manner, he also stood beside her, back to the rest of the tributes. If he had any small doubts about trusting Myia, they were instantly gone. He could definitely trust somebody who had just shown him something that could kill people, including herself. "Got it." He said quietly, watching as she cleared everything away. Glancing around, he made sure nobody was listening in on their conversation, but as he suspected, they were too self-involved with what they were doing. Typical. "Thank you for showing me that." He said, giving her a small smile. The smile suddenly turned into a grin, and then a laugh. "I like that you know this sort of stuff." He teased.

Myia laughed softly at Jared, returning his grin. "Well I have a feeling that we both have information that will benefit each other.."
The next few days passed in a blur for Myia. Her advisor was a young and fit victor named Finnick that she'd met a few times before the Games. He was pleased that Myia had made an ally and he thought Jared would keep her safe. He trusted him. She met with Jared as often as they could manage, growing closer together. She trusted him completely now.
They had theirs scores now. Myia had gotten a 6 which had blown everyone out of the water. What could the gentle girl have possibly done to earn a 6? Well she'd requested a live dove, bow and arrows, and the medicine table. She mixed up the deadly cocktail she'd shown Jared and dipped her arrowhead in it before taking aim at the dove. The bow was the only weapon her parents, her mother actually, had ever trained her on. The bird didn't have a chance and it say on the floor twitching before becoming still. It's how she'd earned her 6.
Now she stood on a pedestal, listening to a count down. Her heart hammered in her chest. They were about to enter the Games. She was raised up slowly and she looked around. They were all in the middle of a grassy meadow with the Cornucopia directly in front of them. She could see Jared just six pedestals down from her.

Post by Jared Ambers on Jan 5, 2015 11:45:50 GMT
Jared spent the remaining days of safety training with an axe in the training centre. His mentor, a woman called Johanna, was pretty certain there'd be one in the arena, he just had to get to it first and that was the tricky part. He'd contemplated whether to go or not to go to the cornucopia and the positives and negatives were pretty evenly spread, so he decided to just go with his gut on the day. It was a risky game to play, but it's not like he had much choice. As well as training, Jared had also formed a closer friendship with Myia, which he was glad about because that way he had someone to help him and likewise he could help her. It was just strange to think that in just a short period of time, one of them or both of them would be dead. He'd gotten a 7 in his assessment, which he was grateful for. During his test, he demonstrated his skill with the axe and also three small daggers. With the axe, it was pretty self explanatory that he beheaded a few dummies, but the game makers expected that because he was a young man from a lumber district. Jared would have easily bet that it was the daggers that got him his score. First, he stood a few feet away from a dummy and fired the dagger, hitting the throat. Then, he stepped back a few more feet and hit the chest, just short of the heart. For the final dagger, he took a few more steps back again and hit the stomach. Each hit had the potential to kill.
The day arrived with all of it's anxiety and brutality and he spent the morning trying to devise a plan, but Jared knew plans weren't going to be effective in an arena full of potential murderers because it would be total anarchy.
He stood on the pedestal, eyes flicking from Myia to the cornucopia. When the timer was up and the horn blew, Jared decided to take a chance and ran towards the cornucopia, eyes focused ahead of him on what he wanted. By the time he got there, the axe was gone, but he managed to grab a few knives and a backpack that hopefully had food or a water container in. Knowing he'd been lucky and that if he stayed there much longer he would more than likely get killed in the bloodbath that was already going on, he ran towards the outskirts of the forest area, looking across the whole clearing for Myia, but he couldn't see her. Canons were going off, about five or six that he actually heard, and he was worried. If he called out, he'd draw attention to himself and he'd be dead, but he couldn't just leave her there. Finally he saw a glimpse of long blonde hair and ran towards her, shoving the backpack on his shoulder.

Myia sprinted off the pedestal. She was small and fast, easily able to outrun most of the muscle bound tributes though she worried about the young girl with the bow. Finnick had been clear and firm with her. Get in and get out. She wasn't allowed to linger anywhere near the Cornucopia. Get out and find Jared. That was her plan.
She sprinted forward and shouldered a bag. She paused for a moment, eyes darting to the bow and arrow. She noticed Jared's ax was already gone. They'd need a weapon. She ran for it, fingers wrapping around the bow just as the girl got to it. She yanked it out of the others girl hand, bending down and scooping up the arrows. She turned and ran then, an angry shriek sounding behind her. She ran towards the treeline, eyes searching for Jared. She sighed in relief when she spotted him, adjusting her course as she ran to him.

When he saw Myia, Jared was glad she'd been able to get the bow. If that girl had gotten it, they'd be in trouble. At least they'd be able to defend themselves with a bow and arrow and two daggers. It was wasn't much, but it was enough - hopefully. Was anything enough when you were in the Games?
Jared caught up with Myia and used his free hand to take hers, running deep into the forest and out of sight. If Johanna was clear about one thing, it was to hide. She'd done it and it worked out for her so she told all of her tributes to hide. "Come on, there has to be somewhere." He said, trying to keep his breathing as steady as possible. Eventually, they came to a secluded area where a few trees had collapsed near a small cave-like area. Looking over at Myia to make sure she was okay with the idea, he began walking towards the cave.

Myia caught his hand when he reached out for hers, squeezing it tightly for comfort. Touch had always been a comfort for her. Hopefully Jared wouldn't mind. She ran with him, side by side, throwing glances over her shoulder although she knew they'd probably be safe. In every Hunger Games there was always the initial bloodbath at the Cornucopia - eleven had been killed by the sound of the canons- and then there was a lul while everyone separated, found allies, and shelter.
She inspected the fallen trees and the little cave, nodding her head. It looked like a good place to hide. If anyone stumbled on it they'd most likely not even notice it was there and if they noticed the trees, the trees still hid the cave. "We should find the nearest source of water next and hide our tracks." Finnick had been insistent on finding water. If you found it, you wouldn't die of dehydration or hunger.

Jared nodded, sighing a large breath. He sat down on the one of the logs that were almost covering the entry to the cave, looking up at Myia to speak. "I just want to see what's in here first." He said, taking his backpack off his shoulder and unzipping it quickly. Pulling out the contents one by one, they had a small flask which they could store a little bit of water in, a tiny bag of what looked like dried fruit, and some folded up fabric. He'd gone for that bag thinking that it would be the best because it was one of the largest, but it was just stuffed with a blanket. Still, warmth was important and it's not like they could easily make a fire.
"I haven't seen any water, have you?" He asked, shoving the stuff and his two knives in the backpack getting to his feet. As he stood up, he tried to recall whether he'd seen any sign of a pond or a river or anything, but he hadn't.
