Myia Rose. The name rang out and slowly everyone turned to look at her. She was older so many kids had to turn around to find her but she soon felt the weight of all their gazes, oppressing her, suffocating her.
“Myia Rose!” The chirpy voice called again, sounding impatient behind a pleasant façade. She swallowed past the lump in her throat and kept her eyes solidly on the stage in front of her, taking slow steps forward. Once she’d parted from the crowd, she heard her mother’s screams and sobs. She refused to look back although the tears she’d just been holding back were suddenly flowing down her cheeks. She was almost to the platform when she felt something heavy and warm land on the back of her leg. She looked back to find Arria clutching her leg. She was just a toddler but she somehow understood what was happening. She was crying, clutching her sister’s leg. Myia bent down and picked her up, shushing her with a smile.
“Its okay, baby, its okay.” She said, trying to soothe the girl. Just then, two peacekeepers came forward and Myia gripped her baby sister tighter in her arms, refusing to let go. One of them grabbed her, the other grabbing Arria. She tore the girl from her arms and Myia began screaming, calling out for her sister. The peacekeeper that had her began dragging her up to the platform and after Arria was out of her sight, she stopped resisting. She went up to the platform and everything else passed in a blur.
It’d been days since her life had been turned upside down. She was now situated in the Capitol, on the fourth floor of the tribute building. Her interview had gone well. She’d never had a problem making people like her. She’d quickly been labeled Panem’s Sweetheart with her gentle features, easy smile, and soft voice. Her advisor said she already had some wealthy sponsors backing her. It was pointless, she knew, though. Being a sweetheart wasn’t going to do anything but get her killed faster in that arena. She was going to die, there was no way around.
She was in the training arena now, surrounded by muscle bound blondes and dagger eyed brunettes. Looking around, she knew she couldn’t do have the things they could. She was well versed with a bow and arrow, her mother’s weapon of choice but her only real weapon was her knowledge. She was the daughter of two doctors. She was an expert in all things medicinal and herbal. She didn’t like to practice her bow and arrow in front of the other tributes so she mostly stuck to the first aid area. She’d taught a boy from 12, a girl from 7, and the boy from 4 some tricks already. She didn’t mind sharing some of her knowledge. The thought that all these kids, herself included, were going to be dead soon made her heart ache.
She sighed and glanced up as someone else joined her at the first aid table where she was practicing making a poultice from Kingsfoil leaves. She recognized him as the boy tribute from 7, she was pretty sure. She gave him a gentle smile, glancing up at him before looking back down at her pester and mortar.

"Jared Ambers!"
In all honesty, he'd expected it. Jared had put his name into the reaping multiple times over the last two years due to his family's struggle. They weren't a rich family, and they never had been. His sister, still at the age of six, was standing by his parents when they called out his name. He glanced over at them as he walked up to the platform, the escort and the previous victors all waiting for him. His mother was crying into his father's shoulder, his sister just looked shocked and was on the verge of tears and his father, although he looked terrified, just nodded at him. In some ways, his father had faith in him. After all, he had been working with his father in the forests chopping down the trees so if an axe became available, he had some form of an advantage.
Once on stage, Jared zoned out completely, just waiting for the female tribute to join him. He didn't know her personally, just knew of her. The peacekeepers escorted them both away, without even a goodbye to their families, and soon they'd be in the Capitol.
Every day he replayed the scene over in his head like a recurring nightmare. It was like a movie was stuck on a reel and there was no other option but to just wait it out. His interview went okay, not great but not terrible. He also hadn't raked in many sponsors, just one or two who probably felt sorry for him.
In the training centre, Jared tried to avoid the other people except for the girl from his own district. Her name was Ciara and she seemed nice enough, but even she must have known that she wouldn't win it. He had, however, kept an eye on the girl from Four. She didn't seem like much of a fighter, but by the looks of it, she knew a lot about medicine and that could be a good knowledge to have on his side. Today, however, he didn't want to just observe, he wanted to talk to her, get to know her a little bit. He'd seen her interview, as he had all the other tributes, and she seemed nice.
"You're... Myia, right?" He asked, stepping beside her at the first aid table. "You're really talented at this stuff." Jared told her, an impressed tone showing in his voice.

Myia spent only a moment longer on her poultice, making sure that it was the right consistency to put on an open wound. When she was done with it, she put the mortar and pester down with her delicate fingers before looking up at the boy with a gentle smile. Everyone who had ever known Myia knew she would never kill another person. That much was apparent from the kindness of her features. Her parents had ingrained in her a very strong sense of the beauty and sacredness of life. Every life was special and should be protected. That was what Myia had wanted to do with her life, save people. Not hurt them.
She nodded her head, gentle smile in place as she looked the boy over. She was certain he was from Seven now. She'd noticed him watching her just the day before when she'd been teaching Carter, the boy from her district, simple sutures.
"Yeah, I'm Myia." She said and then offered him her delicate hand. Her every touch was gentle, soft, the lightest of brushes. A doctor's touch. "Myia Rose. And you're Jared.. right? From Seven?" She asked hesitantly, cocking her head to the side as if she wasn't quite sure, even though she thought it was. She smiled down at the various tools, herbs, and medicines spread out over the table before looking back up at him, her head nodding.
"Yeah, both my parents were doctors. Really successful doctors. I've grown up learning it. Some kids played in the ocean, I sat in and read medical journals." She said and then laughed softly, the happy sound ringing out, foreign in the violent and miserable atmosphere. "I saw you watching me the other day." She said, looking back at him with a slender brow arching, "Are you interested in medicine?" She asked curiously, gesturing at the table for him to join her.

Jared looked down at the girl's face, soft features reassuring him that she wouldn't be a threat to him. Not that anyone would be anything but a threat to him, he wouldn't be able to kill anybody even if he wanted to. Death was a sad thing, and it shouldn't be messed with by a bunch of power hungry teenagers. It was wrong. By the looks of Myia, she was the same. But he'd never know, after all looks could be deceiving.
"That's right." He nodded, also looking across the various herbs on the table. To him, the names of them all were like a foreign language. He'd never been particularly smart or even logical so it was all a little alien to him. He listened to her talk about her parents and her childhood and then laughed awkwardly when she mentioned she'd seen him watching her. Rubbing the back of his neck as another laugh came out, he looked away, obviously embarrassed. "Medicine? No, I'm nowhere near clever enough for that." He protested, letting his hand fall to his side as he stepped closer to the table. "I just thought it was fascinating that you knew all of this."

Myia smiled as the man joined her at the table, making sure he had room and didn't feel crowded. She was always thinking of others first and how they felt. She was going to be simply awful in the arena. She'd help whoever she could and she'd only shoot to injured. Perhaps if she could keep away and stay alive long enough, whoever was left would kill each other and she could go home with no blood on her hands.
She knew that wasn't exactly true though. No matter how she made it out of that arena, it would leave marks and scars on a gentle soul like her.
"Oh, that's not true at all!" She said shaking her head and pulling a new bowl closer to her. She reached over to the stand where they kept various samples of plants and picked one up. It was a twig weighed down with berries the color of midnight. She placed them in the bowl and slid it over to him, glancing around to make sure no one was watching them. No one was of course.
"Being from Seven, you probably know more than you think you do. Like for instance I bet you know I couldn't eat these berries, right?" She asked, her head tilting at him. Nightlock was most common in Seven. Kids of other districts were far more likely to eat the poisonious berries.
She smiled when he complimented her about knowing about medicine and herbs. "Well, I could teach you some stuff, if you'd like?"

Jared just laughed, amused that Myia was determined to prove him wrong. He shrugged, of course he knew that night lock would kill you, most people did. "Well, yeah, but a lot of people know that, it's not just people from Seven." He laughed quietly again, looking around the room to check that people were watching them, especially the careers. Even though Myia was from Four, he didn't really get the career vibe from her. To Jared, she seemed like she'd rather help her worst enemy than try to hurt somebody, and he wondered how she'd fair in the games. It upset him to think about it, but he couldn't see her fighting someone if her life was at stake.
"I'm not a very fast learner, but... yeah, I'd like that. Thank you." He offered her a genuine smile and rolled up his sleeves as he stepped beside her at the table. Looking over all of the different herbs and medicinal spices, he felt extremely overwhelmed, but he was willing to give it a go.

Myia smiled at him and gave him a secretive little wink, making it feel like they were sharing secrets just meant for the two of them. She had a way of being completely open and earnest that made even the most public of interactions seem personal and intimate, like she was giving all her attention over to that one person. It was why her interview had gone so well. "Not as many people as you think know that. You could use that in the arena." She said, her smile faltering with her last sentence. It was just a reminder that they would be going into an arena full of kids to kill them. She knew Four was sometimes considered a Career district, but she was certainly not a killer. She didn't have that instinct anywhere in her.
She smiled up at him again, shaking off the darkness of her thoughts. "I'm sure you'll pick up just fine." She said and then turned her attention to the table in front of them. "Alright, do you know what a poultice is?" That was pretty basic and she figured it'd be a good place to start. A lot of people knew what a poultice was and if he didn't then it still wouldn't take him long to catch onto something simple like that. It'd bolster up his confidence to do the harder things.

"I guess." Jared shrugged, smiling back at her. Just from standing next to her and having spoken to her for the past five minutes, he could tell that she gave off a calm vibe. She was a relaxed person, and with her soft features, it made others feel calm around her. He'd watched her interview like he had with the other tributes, and she was the one person that stuck in his mind because she was so likeable.
Jared thought for a moment, remembering his mother doing something with poultice one time his father cut his arm at work and it got infected. Sighing, he didn't know if he was right or wrong but decided to throw his guess out there. "It's that weird, soft stuff you put on infections isn't it?" Afraid of making himself look like a fool in front of someone who clearly knew what they were doing, he bit his lip, chewing on the inside of his mouth. "I don't really know much about it." He added, looking away from her and at the table where his hand rested.

Myia smiled back at the boy beside her, shaking her head slightly at his self doubt. He was kind from what she could tell and gentle. He was from Seven though, which meant he probably had experience with an axe. He had a chance to make it back to his family. She would help him do that if she could, she decided. He had more hope than she did anyway. She laughed softly, a comforting sound as she nodded her head. "No, that's right. It's soft and pasty. You put it on infected wounds or open wounds to keep them from getting infected. They're a blend of leaves with medicinal properties. You put the leaves in a mortar and pestle and grind them up into a paste." She plucked some leaves from the shelf, showing them to him. "This is Kingsfoil. See how the leaf is waxy and broad? The plant has white flowers and grows close to the ground with little thorns. It's good for fevers along with willow bark." She dropped the leaves into the mortar and then reached back to the shelf, pulling back a bundle of leaves that were much smaller than the Kingsfoil. "This is Heaven's Cross. It's really good for clearing up infections or preventing them. The plant stands taller with blue little flowers, no thorns." She explained, dropping them into the mortar as well. "There. Now we take the pestle and you grind the leaves up slowly until they turn into a paste." She said, showing him the motions slowly before she slid it over to him with a smile. "Now you try."

Jared couldn't help but smile as Myia explained everything, it took all he had not to laugh. He wasn't laughing at her, he was laughing at himself. He wouldn't remember all of this, it was like white noise going in one ear and out the other. Although most likely useless to him, he was grateful that she was taking the time to help him. After all, she could have told him that the stuff that could kill him would help him just to get one more tribute out of the way, but she didn't. She offered to help. When she pushed the mortar over to him, he took it in his left hand and began grinding the leaves together. Unfortunately, he wasn't the most delicate person and quite a few of the leaves ended up on the table.
"I'm sorry," He laughed, pulling his hands back away from the table and shoving them into his pockets. "I've probably messed up what you've just done. Maybe you should just show me."

Myia laughed softly as she watched him. When he pushed the mortar back to her and stepped back, she just smiled at him. "No, you did great. Sometimes leaves fall out. It happens to the best of us." He said, plucking the leaves from the table, dropping them into the mortar. She picked up the pestle and began expertly grinding them into a pulp. When it was the right consistency, she put down the pestle and picked up a crisp white bandage, scooping the pulp into the bandage so he could see it better.
"When it looks like this, then it's ready." She said, reaching back, grabbing onto the cloth of his shirt, pulling him forward back to the table. She smiled up at him from her position several inches shorter than him. "Am I boring you yet?" She teased in her soft voice, studying his face with a smile.

Jared laughed as she pulled him forwards, he hadn't expected that. "I wouldn't say boring, you're just obviously more passionate about this than I am or ever will be." He said, raising an eyebrow as he smiled down at her. He placed his hand on the table, gripping his fingers around the ledge as he looked across the varying herbs and ingredients. While he wasn't an idiot or a fool, he knew that he wasn't intelligent enough to do what Myia did, but he was still interested in it. "In your interview... I think you spoke about your little sister? I just wanted to say that I know how that feels." Jared said, remembering what he'd originally decided to speak to her about.

Myia smiled up at him, shrugging her slender shoulders. "Everyone has different passions. I think it was awesome you were interested and willing to learn even if you don't necessarily like it." She complimented him, seeing the bright side of every situation.
Her smile faltered at his words, Arria's face in her mind as he spoke. She nodded her head slowly, swallowing back the bitter taste in her mouth that always came when she remembered her family grieving for her back at home. Delicate fingers dropped the leaves they'd been clutching as she glanced up at him. "Yeah.. Arria." She tilted her head, a serious and almost somber expression replacing the happy and calm smile she'd worn. "You had a little sister too right?"

Jared gave her a sympathetic smile, feeling bad now off even bringing up the topic. It wasn't to bring her down or make her think of the worst, but it was to let her know someone cared, even if it was a complete stranger who's death depended on her living. The next few weeks were going to be brutal, and maybe having a friend or even someone to talk to when things got hard was a good thing for them both. He nodded at her question, thinking about his family now rather than Myia's. He thought of his parents and how much money they would be missing without him working too, and then about his sister who was only seven years old and had all of this to come. "Yeah, II do. Her name's Lily." He said thinking about the blonde girl and how much he missed her annoying him every five minutes to go with her to the creek near their house. "I'm sorry for bringing his up." Jared apologised, looking back at Myia's obviously upset expression. "I just thought that maybe you could do with knowing you're not alone in this and someone knows how you feel."

Myia smiled back at him softly, listening to his words with a sympathetic feel now. She knew making friends wasn't the goal here but she couldn't help it. She knew how the boy must feel, leaving behind so many loved ones. She reached out for his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"No.. It's okay. Thank you. It is nice to know someone cares. I mean we're surrounded by strangers who just want us as dead as possible right?" She breathed softly to him, her she's flicking around the room before landing on Jarrd again, giving him another smile. "So thank you."
