Gwen had gotten up early to head to go to seven, she couldn't help but love the district. It was her home after all, she went to visit her childhood home. Pictures scattered across the walls, the furniture covered in white sheets. Peeling them back she sat on the old couch, eyes scanning her once familiar home. Now she resided in thirteen most of the time, only really coming here to visit Joven.
He had been her friend for the longest time, though he was older than her they were still close. They usually looked out for each other, that's what they did.
She decided enough sulking in her old home, she set off to the lumber mill to find him. Her blonde hair was in a loose side braid hanging over her shoulder. Her boots padded against the ground as she walked down the streets. Her flannel over shirt providing some warmth from the cold air.
She arrived at the mill quicker than expected, her eyes scanned the group of men looking for Joven. Once she spotted him, she lazily made her way to him. "Hey." She greets him, hoping hed be done here soon.

Sore, that was the only word that came to mind. Long work days, longer hours of enduring pain. The lumbermill was no joke, every day he was pushed to the limit, urged to know no bounds. He had to do anything and everything for little pay, all because wood was a needed resource. For paper, and building, and generally anything they could put to use with the material. War made things hectic, and his District was put under immense stress due to what they offered to both Thirteen and Capitol. So they kept him here, put him to work, and didn't think twice about how it affected him.
Joven couldn't go home, he couldn't be with his best friend, the only family he had. His mother was missing, father a drug addict, and his brother had been murdered whilst in the Capitol a few years back. So it was understandable that he was a bit bitter on the subject of having to be away. Always having been a hard worker, but a stubborn man, he didn't get on too well with his bosses. They kept an eye on him, and made sure not to push his buttons because they knew all too well what he was capable of. Abusive childhood didn't make for a great man, but he pushed through, strived for better. Though, the only reason for that was Gwen.
Muscles aching as he swung the ax upon yet another block of wood, the boy grunted, fed up with working for today. He had the night shift, and had been chopping until the late noon hours without a wink of sleep. His shift was only just coming to an end when a soft voice purred behind him, a smirk crossing over his sweaty lips. Shaking his head teasingly, he set the ax down and glanced over his shoulder. A bruise tinted his cheek, a jagged red scrap just under his eyes proving he'd gotten in a fight not too long ago. He wasn't the best with people, but with her? With her he was who he thought he was meant to be. A cocky grin on his lips, his crystalline irises scanned her up and down before he chimed in a soft, "Hey," in return. Glancing at the clock on the far wall, he sighed, waving her a finger to show he'd only be a minute longer. Finishing up his work, Joven clocked out and swept in at her side, joking with her as he pulled her into a moist hug, "This is no place for a lady, Gwen."
He didn't care if all eyes were on him in disbelief, his best friend was here and he wawasn't about to waste a second trying to play macho.

Once Joven looked over his shoulder at her Gwen saw the bruise and scratch on his face. A small sigh flowing off her lips, she knew Joven and she knew he didn't have the highest amount of patience. She knew about his childhood, how hard he had it, his family wasn't really a family at all. He'd been the opposite of her, he'd always been on his own.
She on the other hand had her father and sister, her mother had died not too long ago but she still had a few people left. Though Joven always had her, even if he didn't think he needed her.
She stood patiently waiting as he finished up his work, she didn't mind. Being in the lumbermill made her feel at home. She use to sneak out here at night and just watch the workers. She'd never be allowed to actually work here, the boss didn't think she was strong enough. She strongly disliked that man.
Relief washed through her as she felt herself being pulled into a sweaty hug. Her arms quickly wrapping around him, her eyes shifting up to his face. "Never claimed to be a lady." She teases, her hand reaching to his cheek. "What happened?" She asked, her tone slightly worried. She cared deeply about him, and she knew he wanted to better himself.

Leaning away some, Joven kept his arms tight around her shoulders, diamond crusted irises glancing down at his friend. His best friend. She was there when no one else was, the girl was his rock. Smirking as she spoke, he found himself shaking his head. Of course she wasn't a lady, Gwen was one of the lads, so to speak. She kept up with the men, working just as hard and playing even harder. Suppressing the cocky twist of his lips, he replied to her in a calm, monotone voice, like it didn't even matter. "Well, a few of the boys don't care for my attitude and I can't stand their scent. So we landed a few punches and moved on," he ended his explanation with a shrug, finally retracting his arms and letting them hang at his sides. He stood a solid foot or so taller than her, so his head was tilted downward, a stupid grin stapled to his plump lips.
It'd been a few weeks since he'd seen her, he hadn't gotten to go back to Thirteen in some time to visit. Over the span they hadn't been in contact, a hint of a beard had set in, his hair grown shaggy and gaining length. Hygiene wasn't his main priority, getting the work done was. So he wasn't in the best state physically or mentally. Stress got to him, and it showed, but with her around it was hard to catch on that he was troubled.
Cocking his head towards the exit of the lumbermill, he suggested, "Let's get out of here." In all reality, they were probably going to end up in the woods with him shooting arrows at squirrels and her singing in the background. They'd chat and all, catch up on each other's lives, but they always fell into the same habits. Which was good, it meant he was comfortable around her, and that was something Joven rarely was.
He didn't have that luxury.

Gwen kept her bright grey eyes glued to her friend, the bruise on his face felt like it hurt her too. He was the only person she really trusted, she'd always came to him with everything. Thought he hadn't been around much, she knew that wasn't his fault. She still missed him, a lot. A roll of her eyes at his comment, of course it was something as simple as not liking their scent. "Be careful, please?" She commands, a brow arching at the man.
She could tell he was worn out physically, which would mean he was feeling the same mentally. He'd not been home to thirteen in quite sometime so she really didn't know what was going on with him. She wished like hell she did.
Gwen could tell he didn't want to stay in the mill any longer than he had to, so she didn't hesitate to start walking towards the creek. She knew they'd fall into their normal pattern, he'd hunt and she'd watch and sing. She wasn't as tough as he was, of course she'd learned a bit but nothing compared to him. "You look like hell." She says simply as they walked, she knew he'd probably not open up to her and say what was wrong. Though it was worth a try.

Face scrunching up at her request, the boy just sighed and rolled his eyes, nodding reluctantly. Sure, he'd be careful, but if they provoked him then he'd simply defend himself. Even if it was over something as simple as a co-worker taking his sandwich on accident instead of their own. "Yeah, I'll stay out of trouble," he replied, but there was no sense of promise in his tone because he knew he'd break it. Smirking, Joven just couldn't stay mad around her, so he dropped all the anger from being in the lumber mill and sunk into the feeling of happiness that naturally came with Gwen around.
Relief washed over him as she yanked him out of the vile building and led him down the all too familiar path to the creek he so desperately missed. He hadn't had time to visit their safe place due to his long hours and rough conditions. He just really needed a break from it all, and she was granting him with one just by simply being here.
Scoffing at her as she commented on his appearance, the brunette just teased back, "Yeah, but have you looked in the mirror recently? Sheesh." He wasn't able to keep the charade up as he ended his rebut with a chuckle. Shaking his head, Gwen just brought out the good in him, making him pure even if he was the most tainted water ever to be stepped in. She never gave up on him, even in his dark days, and he didn't dare ever let her down. Joven would risk anything and everything for his best friend, his life line. Without his little blonde bundle of fire, he wouldn't be able to make it every day. She was what he strove for, Gwen was his goal.

Gwen knew his promise was empty, she hadnt just met the boy. Though she appreciated him trying. She always admire his strength, though his ability to effortlessly shut everyone out wasn't too thrilling to her. When they were together he seemed different, calmer. Gwen changed around him too, she tried to be tough, to not show that she was afraid. Even though he'd never admit it, she was weak compared to him.
She kept her gaze on the boy next to her, smiling as they reached the clearing. A rock sat next to the pond, a smirk on her face as she sat and faced him. "You're gonna miss me so much when I'm gone Joven Payne." She teases back, she didn't mean anything by it.
She knew he'd eventaully begin hunting squirrels, and shed watch as she always did. Taking mental notes and singing softly. Her crystal eyes turned to the water next to her, fingers skimming the top layer lightly. Velvet voice flowing from her throat as she began to sing.
"Of all the money that e'er I had I've spent it in good company And all the harm that e'er I've done Alas it was to none but me And all I've done for want of wit To memory now I can't recall So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all
Of all the comrades that e'er I had They are sorry for my going away And all the sweethearts that e'er I had They would wish me one more day to stay But since it falls unto my lot That I should rise and you should not I'll gently rise and I'll softly call Good night and joy be with you all
A man may drink and not be drunk A man may fight and not be slain A man may court a pretty girl And perhaps be welcomed back again But since it has so ought to be By a time to rise and a time to fall Come fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all Good night and joy be with you all."
