Ezra had ended things with Noel, he had called off the engagement and moved back to the Capitol. His small apartment was too cramped today, so he'd decided to go out. The fall air was crisp and cool, his hands buried in a grey hoodie, his dark jeans almost skimming the damp ground.
The wind whipping around him, it wasn't cold but he wasn't warm either. The break up playing in his mind, it was short. An email he was too much of a coward to do it in person.
He ducked into the small familiar building, the library. He was on leave from work, personal paid time off. He'd been doing a lot of reading so the older woman behind the desk knew him pretty well.
The brute man in front of him freezing his step, Everson. Should he turn and leave? But the woman greeting him by name trashed that idea. "Hi Linda." He greets back, his voice husky and low.
He hoped Everson wouldn't recognize his voice.

What had actually happened? One moment everything was absolutely fine, and the next his world shattered. She grew distant, wouldn't talk and didn't spend as much time with him. The moments alone lost meaning and it all felt forced. Everson just fell out of love with Azalea. It was hard, of course, and took a lot of explaining considering they had a child together, but with the feelings gone why stay?
It took courage to confess, strength to fight through the pain, and tolerance to stick to it, but what's done was done. She'd been sinking out of his grip anyways, it was only time until the tables had turned and she left him. He hated it, oh how he hated it, but they were over. Everson broke up with Azalea.
Now came the dispute over their son. That was the worst part. Everson didn't have a mean bone in his body, but when it came to his son he wasn't going to go down without a fight. It was settled that Azalea's mental health wasn't stable enough to watch over the child alone, since her sisters weren't much help either, so Everson was decided as the primary parent. Of course he'd let her see him, he did still care about her and would never separate a mother from her son. He knew all too well what that feels like, they both did.
Things were just complicated all around and he was doing his best to sort them.
It was extremely difficult to explain to a curious nearly three year old that he wouldn't be seeing mommy everyday and that they would be moving away from home, yet it had to be done. Everything about it sucked, and he hated it more than anything, but this was the best move. If fate be it that they rekindle whatever than can scrounge up, then they'd go from that, but for now it was over.
Packing up everything, Everson bid his goodbyes and headed out with Flynn on his hip. He had a place in the Capitol from quite some time ago- oh, the memories- so that's where he went. A bit of remodeling and baby safsafety precautions, they were up and running within a week. All the pink and purple paint was replaced for a mixture of warm browns, reds, and greens. The obnoxious fluffy furniture was now rounded, leather, and tan. The paintings, the plush, and the flamboyant decorations were swapped for more things that gave off a more calming aura. In general, everything was different- even his dog. Everson had picked up his pooch from his dad on the way here, and boy was he happy to have his little Shiloh back. In the sense of change, the long-haired chihuahua was washed of his pink dye and left his normal creamy white. He was the perfect size for Flynn and they got on quite well. Despite the emptiness in his heart, everything was okay.
They'd be just fine.
A week on their own, and they had yet to run into any accidents or problems- so Everson saw that as a good sign and decided to take Flynn to the library to pick out a few books. He couldn't read, of course, but he loved listening and tracing the pictures. He was incredibly intelligent for his age.
The small shop riddled with books wasn't too far from his apartment, so the walk was short. Flynn bounded inside, with Everson trailing behind, trying to keep reigns on his eager son. It didn't take long for the kid to pluck out three of the most outrageous children's books he could find and tow his father to the check out. Everson was just laughing away, the boy was a character.
But his chuckle was cut short.
The lady checking out the books gazed over his shoulder and addressed a man by the name of Ezra. At first he thought it was a coincidence. It was a common name, right? Everson was trying to convince himself that it was true, but then he spoke. Oh, that voice. No doubt it was his old friend- old best friend. His ex-boyfriend.
The way he was standing, Flynn was hidden from view, so he knew he hadn't seen the boy- let alone even know he existed. It'd been nearly three years since the two men actually spoke. Maybe a letter or two sent over time, Christmas cards, and casual notions through friends, but never face to face- not in a long time. So it wasn't that shocking when he hesitated to turn around some, eyes filled with worry and body rigid. This was the man he broke up with, this was the kid who was at his side everyday when they were younger.
This was, "Ezra." His voice was gruff, eyes narrowing in in him. At that moment, a little green eyed boy peaked out from behind the mass of legs, questioning, "Da', who dat?" Not breaking eye contact, he set his palm onto the top of his son's head and spoke to the taller blonde man.
"An old friend."
Boy did they have some catching up to do.

Ezra froze as the man he once loved turned to face him, what was he suppose to do. They'd had no face to face interaction since the beach, when he'd met Azalea and Noel was with him. Now what had become of him? He'd ended his engagement, the story behind that was messy. A simple email while he was in district two, the spark was gone. He couldn't plan to marry a man he could barely stand to be around, when he found himself taking any minuscule job just to get out he knew he had to leave.
His bright eyes looked to the boy who called Everson dad, the kid a spitting image of the man. Obviously Everson was happy, he had a life going for him, and Ezra was just alone.
His name coming from the man caused Ezra to look a way finally. 'A friend' echoing in his mind. At one point they were friends, the best of friends, always ride or die for each other. Then they were more, but loving him was like driving a new car down a dead end street. Ended so suddenly.
"I'm Ezra, and you are?" He asks, smiling at the boy before looking to Everson. "Hey there old friend." He chuckled awkwardly, hand combing through his short blonde hair.

"Flynn," a tiny voice chipped, the word slidding off his thin lips slickly. It was the word he knew the best, the one he was always eager to share. Everson just chuckled as the little boy strained to meet the eyes of the man before him, the height difference a strain in the neck. Shaking his head, he bent down and scooped up the boy who was a miniature replica of himself- which he was lucky for, the less remembrance of Azalea the better. Every time she came to mind, it pained him. He himself still wasn't sure what happened. They went from inseparable to rolling down a hill at topspeed- her being the force behind it. She wasn't there, and it was beginning to really hurt- Everson had always been sensitive. A month of little interaction and sideways glares was the last straw. The love just wasn't there from her that he could feel, and that was the catalyst of his own heart sinking. Despite him dropping everything he knew for her, it didn't seem like enough. He went into the military to protect her, beat a man senseless for hurting her family, left his own father to live with her, dropped everything to become a dad, and stayed at her side despite her mental issues when no one else would. Every single thing he did was for her, and only now that they were broken up did he see how miserable it was to be a lap dog always pleasing. In the end, it was her drifting away that just made everything click.
None of that mattered though. He had Flynn, and he had his home. That was all he needed to survive.
Falling back to reality with the sound of Ezra's voice, there was no stopping the grin spreading across his face. At least they were getting along, right? No hostility or tears. It wad calm. Though, the word bothered him. Friend. They had always been much more than that, but now? They couldn't even chat without an overwhelming sense of awkward.
This needed to be fixed. Everson needed someone he could confide in since he had a severe lack of pals since he was secluded in Twelve for years on end.
Flynn gazed at Ezra with such awe, the giant fascinating him. Guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree, eh? Nibbling on his bottom lip, he kept his gaze on his son, chest rising and falling heavily. Finally, his emerald eyes batted up to meet the crystal ones of his ex, the words on his lips natural.
"We should talk," it was quick, rushed as if he didn't quite want him to catch it. The lady behind them coughed lightly, sending his head snapping her way, only for his face to soften as she handed him the books and smiled. Stepping out of Ezra's way so he could reach the counter, he patiently waited for a reply.
He'd get it if the answer was no, this mess was all his fault in the first place.

Ezra had heard that Everson was spending most of his time in twelve, which is why he hadn't seen him or really made effort to have any contact. The way they ended was messy, and the whole thing was just left hanging in the air. Three years of radio silence, three years of awkward pent up.
Ezra gave the boy a small smile, his tone soft and gently. "It's nice to meet you Flynn." His grin slowly fading as he looked over to Everson.
The time he'd spent with Noel was nothing compared to the short time he had with Everson. He couldn't help but feel his cheeks flush as he was told they should talk. Nerves hitting him like a wrecking ball. Their friendship was different there was no denying that, but could they really be friends again. Could the damage be repaired?
He didn't know if he could take it, his own failed relationship constantly being remembered when he'd see Everson's happy one. He knew he wasn't ready for that, but he did want his best friend back.
"Yeah I think we should." He agreed softly, moving slowly over to the woman. Handing her the books as she processed them and gave them back. "Where would you like to go?" He asks keeping his gaze on the horror books in his hands.

Relief was the only emotion Everson could pluck out of the rush of feelings surging through his mind. He said yes, but was that really good? He'd have to confess that his relationship was a bust. That going straight hadn't worked, that Azalea was another dead end. He had a kid with the girl, yet the love dried up. So how could he even put that in words? How could he face his ex's joy with Noel when he was struggling to keep sane every time Flynn asked about his mother.
Sighing deeply as Ezra faced the two, he racked his brain for a place, but in the end- it was his son that chose. He was yawning, wiping his eyes and clinging to him. The kid wad sleepy, which meant one thing. Nap time.
Everson had to get home, but he also knew that probably wasn't the best place to go. Him and Ezra boned on that bed, they strip teased each other in that kitchen. It'd only make things more awkward, but he didn't have any other option.
Adjusting his hold on the little boy, he forced his gaze on the male, his cheeks tinted pink as he hesitantly explained, "Um. He needs to sleep, so I have to go home. We could talk there?" Really, there was no other option- so Ezra could always object if he couldn't deal with that. Understandable, of course.
Nervously biting his lip, he'd always been a bit shy. Anxious in situations that posed embarrassing or awkward, but this was needed.
It couldn't be left this way.

Ezra could tell Everson was nervous, the way he was biting his lip gave it away. His hand tugged on the mans chin, forcing him to stop. "Don't be anxious, we are still friends." He explains, his eyes finally meeting Everson's.
"Your house works." He adds, the memories flashing through his mind. The nights that he had terrible dreams and only Everson's arms could shake them. The kisses, the endless nights they'd spent talking and cuddling. He knew that place was filled with the memories that ached his heart, but he'd do it to repair his friendship with Everson.
He tucked the books under his arm and headed towards the exit of the library. He knew his way to Everson's all too well, was that a good thing probably not. He knew once they were there he'd have to relive all the gory details of the break up. Something he was bracing himself for.

Touch. It was something so keen in the calming process and the man knew all too well how to ease Everson's nervousness. A jerk of the chin and a firm promise and he was okay. Reassurance was key. Though, it didn't last too long. Ezra's fingers left a burning print on his jaw, making his stomach flutter and heart thump. Oh no. Not again.
Pushing the thoughts aside, he solemnly followed Ezra out. Flynn passed out on the way to the house while the two men kept quiet. It was comfortable, though. Each were plotting out what they were going to say. Ten minutes tops and they were there- Everson awkwardly digging in his pocket with a child slumped across his chest, Ezra's heavy gaze not helping his jittery hands. Alas, the keys were shoved in and the door was unlocked. Pushing through, he allowed his old friend to take a seat while he laid the boy to rest. Tucking him in and pressing a kiss to his forehead, he lingered over him for a moment before sneaking out stealthily.
Easing the door shut, he scampered to the living room where he found the man on the couch, lounging like it was his. Smirking, Everson shook his head and took a seat beside him. Remaining silent for a moment, he glanced at their knees- nearly brushing, so close. Tempted to scoot away, he decided against it. Wouldn't it come off rude? Plus he didn't want to, he missed his friend.
The household was eerily different, so the memories were easier to tuck away, but the ever familiar tap of paws brought back a few too many thoughts he didn't quite want to remember. Shiloh did some odd things back then. The pup hopped into Everson's lap, though he begged for Ezra to pay attention to him.
Inhaling sharply and ignoring the dog for the moment, his gaze locked on Ezra's, lips moving swiftly, "You first."
He still had no idea what he was going to say, he needed time to word his sob story.

Ezra looked around the house, it felt forgien to him. It use to home so many fond memories, that now felt fake or hidden. He sat on the couch, not hesitating to make himself at home. He leaned back on the sleek leather couch, eyes scanning the room as Everson put the boy to bed.
Everything had changed, for the best for some for the worst for others. He was mentally preparing himself to explain everything to Everson, the story seeming worse than it really was.
Butterflies hitting his stomach as the man joined him, their legs almost touching. He couldn't help but feel a tinge of excitement. The small dog the only familiar thing, and even that had changed. His muscular hand strokes the dogs soft fur. His gaze traveling up to Everson's the moment of truth.
"Well I suppose I could start off with I ended my engagement to Noel." He begins, he knew he'd sent them a wedding invite or at least an announcement. "I just really wasn't in it anymore, I could plan to marry someone I barely could be around. I mean I was taking every opportunity to get out, tiny jobs my commanding officer would normally brush off. I wasn't in love anymore. So now Im living back in the Capitol alone. Reading mostly, working quite a bit." He finishes, remembering the break up call Everson gave him while he was away on a job.
His life seemed pathetic, he seemed broken. He cleared his throat trying to compose himself. "What about you? Why are you living here instead of twelve with Angela?" He asks, he never really could remember or really care about her name.

This is wrong. His fingers shouldn't be brushing his upper thigh as he palmed the dog. No, Ezra had a fiancé, he had a life ahead of him- his hand should not be this close to his crotch, but alas, it was. There was no easy way of asking him to stop, nor did he even really want to. It was comforting, in a sense.
Then it all shattered. Everything he knew about Ezra's past three years just melted away. His best friend wasn't happy, not even satisfied with his life. There would be no wedding he'd make an excuse to not attend, or an adopted child he'd refuse to let play with Flynn out of grief. He wouldn't even have to receive sappy Christmas cards from the family. No, Ezra was just as miserable as himself. No lovers, no hope.
Despite the bad news he'd just been given and the sob story he was about to spill, Everson grinned. He chuckled, even. Reality hit him, hard. They were playing around with fate, taking turns they were never meant to take. Going down paths they should have avoided. Azalea and Noel were never meant to be, they were temporary heartthrobs blocking the necessary route. It wasn't a course he personally regretted taking- he had Flynn now, but he couldn't say the same for his friend. Did Ezra gain anything from his previous relationship, or was it a wasted three years? Either way, it was all history- apart from the child, that is.
Both of their relationships ending at the same time, isn't that something of a sign? Everson was getting the vibe that he was never supposed to break up with Ezra.
He'd been staring, lost in his thoughts for some time when he finally snapped out of it and realized he needed to explain what happened with 'Angela'. Crap. He sent his palm to his scalp, anxiously rubbing at the roots of his hair as he mapped at his explanation. In a surprisingly light voice, he kept his words happy, "You see, I find it funny that you say that." Kind of rude, but he was leading to something, "I mean, it sucks that you had to end it and all, but I find the timing just hilarious," and here he goes, time for his own sad story. His voice faltered, gaze falling- it still hurt to think about her, "Um, I-I'm living here because I broke it off too. She, she just wasn't there for me like she used to be. I know I should have handled it differently, but I panicked. I'm still a kid, Ezra! I didn't know what to do," he was getting a tad bit emotional, voice raising for emphasis only to fall into a broken mumble moments later, "She was just drifting and I started thinking about the long run and nothing seemed to fit. I don't hate her, though I'm sure she hates me for what I've done, but I jut don't love her anymore. Not like I used to." He paused, adjusting himself in his spot, hand falling to his lap to join the other. His fingers tangled as he struggled to go on, "So I left, like I always do when the situation gets sticky. I took Flynn because sh-she has some problems and I knew they'd only get worse with me leaving. It wouldn't be safe for him there. I did what felt right. I'm a terrible person for leaving, I should have stuck around because even if I was miserable, she was okay. It didn't matter if I was happy in the relationship as long as she was at ease, right? I was selfish," he wasn't in the slightest, but he was always doubting himself. He was never good enough. In all honesty, leaving that girl was the best thing he could have done. She was a leech draining him, so it was best that he left when he did.
Sighing, he found a conclusion, "Either way, it's over. For good. I came here because this the only home I know," plus she couldn't get in the Capitol, so there was no chance for her to take Flynn away in the midst of night. Not that he was afraid she was that delusional, but just in case. "I've been here for a week-ish, just thriving." Shrugging it off, he finally met Ezra's gaze again, eyes damp but no tears fell.
He was quite emotional.
Trying to act as if he wasn't that troubled by it all, he teased, "Don't you find it funny?" He was referring to how they both managed to rid themselves of their partners at the same time. It came off as a joke, but he was serious.
What was fate getting at really?

Ezra sat stunned at Everson sat laughing at his misfortune. Thoogh he knew his friend had some reason to be laughing, when he heard the story he knew. He could tell Everson was upset, he'd been his friend forever. The little boy was a spawn of a broken relationship, Everson obviously loved the kid, but he knew it had to be hard.
Noel and Ezra never talked about adopting a child, so he had no ties to Noel. He was nothing but a detour from the path he was suppose to be on. Maybe all the trials and hard times were meant to bring the two men back together. Could it be that they weren't suppose to part in the first place?
The truth was Ezra couldn't shake the love he still had for Everson, the question was did the man feel the same? Once Everson was finished Ezra brought his crystal eyes up to the man.
His hand finding his friends, a comforting squeeze was all Ezra gave. "You're not selfish, and you're definitely not just a kid. You're my best friend, and I know for certain if you thought it could be saved you'd have never left. You had a reason Everson, don't ever feel bad for doing something for yourself for once." He explained, his hand still gripping Everson, his tone continued in a positive way.
"You guys may have not worked but you got an amazing kid there, so you should regret nothing. Things get sticky, people leave, that is life." He continued, wanted to add 'you left me, and I lived.' But he decided against it.
"But to answer your question, no I don't find it funny because I never stopped loving you." Ezra finishes, looking down at their hands before dragging his gaze back to Everson. What he did next could make or break him. Leaning in he let his lips find the other pair, soft and shy he let his lips dance with Everson's butterflies erupting in his stomach. Would Everson return it or pull away? Ezra didn't care in that moment.

It was just what he needed to hear. Reassurance that this was the right thing to do, the best thing. Not only would Everson be okay, but Flynn would flourish in the Capitol, away from the chaos his mother and aunts caused. The household back in Twelve had always been a mess, not quite literally but more in the sense that it was hard to handle anything or get something done. Always bickering, never getting any genuine time with his son or girlfriend at the time. Here was serene, blissful even. It was quality time with his little boy and it had given him the chance to rekindle old friendships.
In this case, it was Ezra- who always knew just what to say. They were books to each other, able to read one another page by page, and they could even predict the endings. Everson parted his lips to speak, readying his vocal cords when an all too familiar tongue slipped into his mouth accompanied by a kiss.
He'd be lying if he'd said he didn't see this coming.
It was all too clear what was meant to happen from day one, and he'd been an idiot for playing with that. Ezra was his other half, and always had been. Always will be. So he didn't fight it, not that he wanted to. He missed the feeling of genuinely being in love with someone, of being eager to press his lips against their's and make out like no one was watching. With her, it felt forced. With him, it came naturally. This is were he was meant to be.
There was no hesitation in Everson's actions, he was kissing back almost instantly. Lips snug against his, he raised his hand to cup Ezra's jaw, fingers tenderly massaging the skin while the other tangled their phalanges and held the limb close in his lap. The pooch had hopped off and hobbled down the hall, leaving the men alone to do what they pleased, and he did just that. Leaning into Ezra even further, Everson eased his chest against his, head tilted to deepened the kiss. It had been too long, and he regretted every moment he'd lost not spending time with this man- though he wouldn't give his son up for the world. It was a win-win, really. The love of his life and a child of his own. Everson, despite his ups and downs with love and life, was blessed with all he was given. Urging Ezra to lay down, he fully invaded the man's space- forcing him on his back so he could straddle his waist, mouths still linked together. Both hands moving to comb through his hair, the man settled himself over the other, taking charge and making it known jut how much he loved him- how much he missed this.
Not bothering to pull up for air, he let their tongues dance, his emerald eyes sealed shut as he moaned into his best friend's mouth. It wasn't lustful in the slightest, more so in asking for forgiveness for what he'd done.
Everson broke the best thing he ever had, and he wanted to fix it.

Ezra was blissfully surprised when Everson didn't push him off immediately, pure, raw joy blossomed in his stomach. He couldn't help but deepen the kiss and continue the exploring of Everson's all too familiar mouth. His muscular hand trailing up the man's muscular back until reaching his soft hair. Fingers curling into the soft locks, as his other hand wrapped around Everson's. Their chests collid, Ezra laid back willingly as the man wordlessly commanded him to.
Everything with Everson felt so natural, every move they were making felt right. It never felt like that with anyone else. With Noel it was a fake 'I love you' and forced smiles and kisses. It never felt this right, this meant to be. That's how he knew he was suppose to be with his best friend forever. As more than friends, they were meant to love one another. With every fiber of his being he could feel it. Though a small part of his brain asked 'What if he leaves again?' Only to be answered by the moan into his mouth from the man.
He forgave him, without a doubt, he knew he needed him. Ezra let his fingers trail up and down Eversons back, only stopping once they reached the belt of his pants. The motion all too familiar, unzipping, taking his belt off, it was all natural to Ezra. Though he wasn't sure if Everson wanted it. He didn't care though, his fingers nervously unbuckled the man's belt. Metal clanging softly as he tried to remove the belt without detaching their lips. He didn't want to lose this feeling.

This was wrong. They were moving too fast, and this could be mistaken as him being lustful. He wasn't in the slightest, he'd simply just missed this sense of euphoria and wouldn't dare to stop the pleasure from all that was going on. Not to mention the fact that he was head over heels in love with the man pinned underneath him, always had been. So what they were doing wasn't necessarily wrong, just rushed. Everson knew he should pull back and ease the tension in the moment, make it clear that Ezra wasn't just a rebound off of his failed relationship, but he couldn't. The overwhelming need to be skin on skin with this brute man drowned out any sense of responsibility. So as the blonde's greedy fingers tore at his belt, he didn't stop him. It wasn't like they hadn't done this before, plus Flynn was asleep and safe- what was the harm?
Everson was finally getting what he wanted, things were finally going right. Having a little fun with his ex-boyfriend couldn't hurt, in fact, it would probably heal. After this was all said and done, they'll probably hatch out terms and continue where they left off. Only this time they'd be raising a son and not disputing over his long work hours. He'd grown from that, dropped his adolescence for manhood. He was going twenty-one after all, the male had been only eighteen when they dated. He was a new man now.
And he was sure going to act like it.
Letting his hands dance out of the blonde strands of hair and onto Ezra's toned chest, Everson teased the fabric of his shirt, meaning to take it off but the action proving too much work. It'd break their lip lock as well, and he wasn't too keen on doing that. Yet, he knew if this was going to go anywhere they would have to at some point. Sighing internally at the realization, he tore his lips away from the other man's, a wicked glimmer in his rancid green eyes. In one quick motion, he tore his own shirt, giving Ezra a chance to take his own off. While he was at it, he unbuttoned his pants, jumped off the couch, and eased those off too, leaving him in just a loose pair of navy blue boxers. Standing proud before Ezra, he smirked, curling his finger at the man, he cooed, "Come on, big boy. More room on the bed."
Spinning in place, he took slow steps to the bedroom, getting rather giddy at the idea of what was to come. Once he rounded the corner and was out of eyesight, he picked up speed and darted to the room to beat him. Throwing the door open and hopping onto his king-sized, Everson laid himself out on the comforter, gaze locked on the door. This scene was all too familiar, for they'd done the same thing the night he'd dumped water down his front. Memories, they weren't always a curse.
Propping his hands behind his head, the man held a cocky grin, his underwear all too revealing on just how excited he really was. His chiseled chest and abs laid out on display, just waiting to be pressed against another solid pair.
Were they going to quick? Surely. Did he care? Not in the slightest.

Ezra kept his fingers tight in Everson's hair, he couldn't shake this feeling. It all seemed so right, yet something nagged at him. If course they felt the same about each other, but could they just pick up where they left off? There is a child involved now, he didn't know how they'd manage. Though right now he wasn't going to get too lost in his thoughts.
He was put back into reality when Everson parted their lips, his eyes fixed on the man as he pulled off his shirt. Ezra quickly pulled off his, pants as well. Excitement blooming in his stomach, and groin to be honest. Everson's invite causing a wicked grin on his lips.
He quickly followed the man, trailing behind him for a second giving him time to get into the room. He kept his eyes fixed on him as he entered the room, he was laid out on the bed. Ezra couldn't wait to feel their bodies together. He crawled onto the bed, leaning over Everson. Hand skimming down his chest and onto his underwear. A small deep moan forming in the back of his throat, lips found the man's once again.
