Adalyn sat at the kitchen table, her legs curled beneath her. Tatum sitting on her lap as she finished helping him eat his breakfast, the bouncing three year old was just one ball of energy. The news playing on the tv in the other room, her eyes stuck on it. The capitol had been bombing and attempting to take the districts, a disgusting act to her. Killing innocent people was the presidents specialty. Rolling her eyes she clicks off the tv before Tatum declares that he is done with his food, scooping him up she quickly puts the bowl of left over oatmeal in the sink. That'd be fun to clean up later.
A hefty sigh came off her lips as she set the boy on the kitchen floor, watching him take off to look for Ambrosia. Being pregnant with a three year old was no easy task. Though she was showing she wasn't insanely huge yet, about six months or so. The little girl stirring in her stomach as she walks towards the bedroom where Trigger was. "Honey?" She called out, once she'd found the bed abandoned.

It wasn't like he wanted this. He never did, but was it ever even a choice otherwise? No, of course not. Trigger doesn't get a say, and now neither does his family or the new recruits built in his image- but never better. Nothing beats the original.
Duty called, though, and no was something he couldn't say so when the news came through, he was sent packing. War was here, and he was the storm cloud meant to wipe out the decaying boardwalk- aka the military of Thirteen. It was bound to happen eventually, but just a few months after his wedding? God. He never gets any time for himself.
It was always something.
Trigger was just getting out of the shower when Adalyn came into the room, his hair sopping wet, and a damp towel clinging to his bare waist. Grief was clear on his face as he glanced her way. His eyes caught the bump on her torso, hi daughter was holed up in there, and if the war lasted long enough, he wouldn't be there when she was set free. Gulping, he murmured, a solemn, "Hey," still yet to tell her about him leaving.

Adalyn's brows furrowed as she quickly caught his mood, her hand softly placed on her belly as she sat on the bed. "What's wrong?" She asks, her tone concerned as she reached her free hand to him. Aching for him to tell her it was nothing, and that she was overreacting.
Something in her heart was telling her something was actually wrong. Something wrong so short after their wedding, seemed the couple could never catch a break.

Trigger knew it'd be sooner rather than later that he'd have to tell her about him leaving, but while he was still in nothing but a slipping cloth? He didn't object, simply just took her hand and sighed, gripping the towel loosely with the other as he shamefully looked at his feet.
"The war," he prompted, that in itself being an explanation, but he continued, "The President needs me to join, for- you know." It was times like these where he spited his father for ever making him like this.
Daring to stare into her eyes with his sorrowful ones, he added, "You'd stay in the Capitol, with either my family or in the President's Mansion. Your choice, just wherever you feel safe." His voice was empty, lifeless.
Why him?

Adalyn quickly felt herself tense, he was leaving? They were newly married, and she was definitely pregnant and he was leaving. Though she couldn't say she was surprised, with everything going on she knew the president would call him one day, but now?
"You can't leave, what about us? Your family? You're gonna leave Tatum and me?" She asked, her voice hurt and sad. Tears filling her chocolate eyes.
"I mean what if something happens, I can't live without you. Especially not with two kids." She adds, her eyes finally finding him.
"They already took James, now you." She whispers softly, tears finally falling.

The tears in her eyes triggered frustration more than sympathy, his fingers yanking at his hair as his towel dipped down his hips, signalling it'd drop in no time- to which he replied with stomping off and throwing on some boxers quickly. Staying in his hunched position over the dress, his back was to her, muscles rippling as he sighed.
"It's not like I'm choosing to leave you, Adalyn. I would rather die than fight for that man, but he has things over me," her and Tatum, if he didn't comply they'd be goners,"And don't worry. I'll be fine, and you'll be safe." He was still indestructible, and highly dangerous. "Just," he paused, the stress unbelievable. He knew she was worried, but it was doing more harm than anything.
Shaking his head, he joined her on the bed, wrapping his arms around her tightly as he whispered in her ear, "Just know I'd never leave you or our family."

Adalyn kept her eyes on Trigger, as if she'd never seen him before or would never see him again. Legs curling under her as she watched him pull on clothes, her hand swiping away the tears.
She knew he wasn't leaving them by choice, but she couldn't help but worry. If the Capitol could make indestructible soldiers, surely thirteen could too. That thought sickening her to the very core.
His arms around her literally made her train of thought come to a slamming stop. Worry slowly melting away, her head resting on his muscular chest. "I know you wouldn't, I just hate when you're gone." She admits, her finger drawing small patterns on his chest.
"I'll stay with your family." She adds, answering his statement from before. "Tatum has been asking to see Rhett." Her tone soft, simple before asking "How long will you be gone?"

"And I hate leaving," he returns, sighing heavily as he pulls her in closer. His bare chest still slightly damp, he can feel the water smear across his chest under her touch. A sigh tumbled off his lips, his soaked hair pressed against his forehead as he ran his fingers through her hair. Satisfied with her choice to stay with his family, he knew she'd be safer there.
"Until it's over," he guessed, honestly not sure. The President would could him as long as he needed and Trigger didn't have a say. Sadly.
What else could he say?

Adalyn kept her eyes on Trigger, not wanting to look away for a second. Her mind wandering, what if he missed the birth of their daughter? Surely she couldn't do it alone, Tatum was hard enough. A million what ifs running through her head at once. Another important question forming in her mind. "When do you have to leave?" She asks, not sure if she wanted the answer.

It wasn't hard to spot the questions racking her brain behind those gorgeous, quivering brown eyes, and Trigger nearly regretted ever dragging her into this situation. Nearly. He couldn't live without her, and he was certain she felt the same. So when she asked her next question, the one her mind finally settled on, he gulped. "Tomorrow," he paused, his eyes never leaving hers as he sighed, "Morning. Have to be on the train by ten at the latest." Slamming his eyes shut, his stomach lurched, he couldn't do this.
"You can ride with me, though," he promised, keeping his lids shut, not daring to look at her, "To the Capitol. I'll drop you off at my parents.... then head out."
God, this sucks.

A large sigh escaped through Adalyn's lips, her eyes finally finding Trigger's. She tried to hide her disappointment, she tried to be strong for him and Tatum. Her hand finally rested on her stomach, of course he had to leave that soon. "Ten? Jeez they don't waste anytime." She laughs, never being a morning person. Behind her laugh you could tell she was hurting.
"I suppose I should pack." She finally realized, with another large sigh she stands up and heads to the closet to grab a suitcase. "And why exactly can't I stay in four?" She asks, stopping as she turned to her husband.

"No time at all," Trigger teased, though his words lacked any sense of humor. They were dry, dead leaves tumbling around the room, melting off his chapped lips. Even so, he could help himself from dropping a low hiccup at her next statement, his breath catching at her question.
He'd already packed, of course- not that he necessarily needed to. They would issue him a uniform and clothing to change into, but he insisted on bringing a thing or two from home to help him make it through the day.
There was no reason to mention that, though, as she turned to face him, the look on his face faltering. How could he tell her?
Well, no secrets. This was his wife, the mother to his children. He couldn't hold back, despite what his moral judgement told him- the president wouldn't like this.
So, with his voice barely a whisper, he dropped his head like a defeated warrior shamed of his fate and muttered, "It's where they plan to attack first."

Adalyn figured Trigger already had packed or was waiting till the last minute, either way was fine with her. Though the thought of her husband leaving wasn't her greatest thought, she knew he'd return. She dreaded the day Tatum left, or their unborn daughter.
Her thoughts came to a stop when she'd heard what he said. They were attacking four? Her favorite district, the places they'd got married, and the place that held their home.
Tears formed in her eyes, meeting Trigger's for a moment before her gaze fell to the ground. Her fingers shook as she tries to fold her clothes, eventually she gave up and rejoined him on the bed. "Goodbye home." She whispered softly looking around, before she was interrupted by Tatum charging into their room.
He jumped up on the bed and into Trigger's lap. His shimmering eyes, looking up at his dad. "Don't be sad." He said softly, unsure what was going on but he could feel the tension.

It was almost too much for him to handle. Between Adalyn's minor breakdowns over him leaving and Tatum oblivious to what was going on- Trigger was so close to snapping, and not out of anger, but out of pure sorrow. He was losing control everything he'd worked so hard to gain just because he was needed to dance around the battlefield.
The bed hung low under the weight of them all, and he couldn't look either of them in the eye, his teeth trapping his bottom lip- blood pooling in his mouth from the raw skin tearing. Shaking his head at himself, he pulled Adalyn in close and Tatum even closer. Pressing his lips to each of their foreheads, he promised, "Everything will be okay," but he couldn't help but be sad. Not even the boy could lift his spirits.
Why was it always him torn down, dragging his family with him?

Adalyn could feel Trigger's tension growing, she looked up and kissed his cheek. She knew how he felt, no one wanted to leave their family. She knew he'd come back, and everything would be perfectly fine. Though she knew once Tatum knew Trigger was leaving he would be heartbroken, but she wouldn't be telling him until she had to.
"Tatum why don't you go pack a bag, we get to go see Uncle Rhett tomorrow." Adalyn says in her happiest strongest tone for Tatum.
"Really? Yay." He squealed, hopping off his parents and running into his room. Once he was gone Adalyn returned her attention to Trigger.
"Hopefully you get home before she does." She laughs slightly, eyes finding her stomach.
