Here he was again, leaning against the wall of his bakery, emerald irises scanning the crowd of citizens who paraded past. They were so full of themselves, prancing and laughing- that's the only thing Niall didn't care for about the inhabitants of his home. Back in Nine nothing was like this, but some things he just had to get used to. This was the biggest one. Usually he'd be inside of the bakery, cooking up a storm with Payne at his side, but today he'd let the younger one take lead while he searched for a special someone. Serena. He hadn't seen her since they kissed, and he'd been too giddy (maybe cocky) to ask for her number. So he relied on his eyes, hoping she'd come by. It'd been maybe a week- most of which he was in Nine dealing with Apple's return- but he was here now, and on the prowl. The wind ripped at his hair, and he made a desperate attempt to fix it. Tossing his head down and yanking his fingers through it, he threw it all to one side. An irritated look masked his face as he glanced back up. Just in time to see her.

Leaving someone like Serena hanging was not necessarily the best idea if she didn't like you, but, if she did, then it really wasn't a good idea. Still, each day, Serena and taken a walk past the bakery she was sure belonged to Niall and his brother, or family, or whatever, Serena had lost that detail during the whole kissing situation which had gone on. Each day though, there had been no Niall, no one was there really. So, Serena had vowed that today would be the last day that she'd stroll past and today she'd look from the other side of the road, more subtle.
Hands tucked into the pockets of a blue blazer, Serena was once again ignoring the stereotype that all Capitol citizens wore ridiculous outfits; they weren't her thing, perhaps they had been when she was five, not now though. As the wind picked up, Serena rounded the corner onto the bakeries street, pushing back a piece of hair which had just come lose. Eyes flicking down to the pavement, Serena for once wished that maybe she'd dressed a bit more eccentrically, she didn't blend in, she stuck out like a sore thumb, like she was from one of districts. That was when she looked up and saw his mob of hair, taming it with a tussle of his hands. Crap, what was she going to do now?
Faltering for a moment as she walked right by the bakery, just in time to see him see her. Shoved slightly by a passing citizen, Serena sent a glare their way, before heading to the curb of her path, offering him half a smile, arms crossing over her chest, wondering how to act from here.

It took everything Niall had in him to not snap at the citizen who ran into Serena, derailing her from her path, but once their eyes met again, he dropped his anger and pushed himself off the wall. Prancing his way through he crowd towards her, his curls bounced in a bundle of joy.
This could couldn't be happening. She was here, in front of his, hugging herself and all he could do was stare.
It took someone nudging him from behind as they rushed past for him to knock out of it and find his voice.
"Hey," the one word was shaded, dragged down by the charcoal hands of his voice, a clip ending it- hinting his accent, "Long time since we've spoken."
God, he didn't realize how much he missed the girl he'd only ever met once until now. Another shove sent an unamused look to his chiseled face as he leaned down to whisper in her ear over the mass of footsteps, "Why don't we go inside my bakery, less crowded."
Pulling back, his emerald eyes scoured her face, searching for any sign that she even wanted to talk to him after he'd left her hanging that day.
Hopefully she felt the sparks he had.

For some reason, Serena had been expecting him to beckon her over to the other side of the busy street, not him come to her. A small smile pushing its way onto her lips, Serena hastily removed it, reminding herself that she was supposed to play distant. "Long time since we've seen each other, let alone spoken." Tone surprisingly cool for a usually upbeat girl, Serena pushed a hand into the back pocket of her jeans, just as he leaned down to whisper to her. Pausing a moment as her eyes met his, Serena looked down at the ground, then over his shoulder at the shop. "Only if I get free cake." She commented, all serious with no form of laughter or amusement on her face. But a second later the frown was gone, as she rolled her eyes and slipped past him, casting a look back towards him as she pushed opened the door of the bakery, nose immediately twitching at the warm air and tainted smell.

It would be a lie if he said her words hadn't stung. The sad truth was that she wasn't wrong, they hadn't even seen each since that day, and that made him look like a major douche when he wasn't. Niall wanted more from her than just a quick little peck. The sparks that burnt his heart every time she passed his mind, which was often, rekindled his hope for simply a friendship- even if he needed something on the complete opposite side of the spectrum. He didn't know her, though, and she didn't know him. Not really. Not for who they really were. That needed to change before they went any further- if she even wanted to- but first things first, he needed to patch up this little hiccup Apple had caused. It was her fault, after all, that he wasn't able to stay in the Capitol. He had to reside in Nine with Zayn, Payne, and her until she was safe and stable. He hated her for that. For leaving them so worried, so hopeless, then come back and ruin everything by expecting so much. He'd never tell Zayn that, though, the kid loved his step-sister way too much. The thoughts clogged his mind faded the moment her face twisted, something spiteful hanging on such a beautiful face. His heart broke, her anger so apparent- so piercing. A tumble weed in the wind as she pushed past him, he stumbled after her, head held down like a puppy caught peeing on the beloved sofa. Making his way through the crowd, he entered the bakery behind her, the bell ringing for a second time at their arrival. Payne skittered out to the front at the sound, his face falling as his eyes brushed over his brother's gloomy aura. "How may I help you?" He spoke towards the blonde, struggling to not ask Niall if this was the girl he spoke nonstop about. His brother's glare re-ensured that it wasn't the smart thing to do, his dark voice shaking the younger a bit as the low tones melted into the sickeningly sweet air, "Give her some free cake." An order, something he only gave when he was upset- he was incapable of such a thing when his heart was throbbing and warm. "And what kind?" Payne requested, trying to hide his discomfort as Niall shuffled to a booth. There were few things that upset the teen- his brother in such a state was one of them. An eerie squeaking noise brushed over the ears of the bakery's inhabitants as the boy with the untamed curls dragged his bottom over the vintage leather. Back to the pair battling over flavors, his gaze danced from the table to the wall and back. Spite painted his eagerly handsome features, his hate towards Apple bubbling- his mind convincing him it was all because of her that Serena disliked him so much now. Was it really, though?

Okay, Serena had not planned to cause such discomfort between what she assumed were the brothers. Glancing back and forth between Niall and Payne, Serena sucked in her lips for a second, releasing them through a bite of her lower lip as she took in he display of cakes. Everything looked so good. They were both talented, that was safe to say. Offering Payne a quick smile, Serena could sense his unease she caught in Clara often, some maternal feeling kicking in. "Chocolate, anything with chocolate would be great, thank you." Serena said, putting on the same polite aura she would for friends of her fathers before turning back around to face sulky Niall.
What was with him all of a sudden?
Was it her? Crap, had she upset him? That wasn't what she wanted. That was never what Serena wanted, she'd done it though, all number of times in the past, never on purpose though, that point was vital to understand.
Moving towards him, Serena offered him a small smile. "Hey, don't be grumpy, someone may be falling in love with your smile." Something Clara had always heard from her and Clara's nanny when they were younger and unable to care for themselves.

The banter going on behind him brought the teen to his senses, shaking him out of the funk Serena had put him in, but not completely. His frustration was still very apparent on his face, but it was less at the world and more at himself. Niall knew he probably came off as pathetic for getting upset over a girl he left hanging pushing past him and not welcoming him back, but it's because that's not all it was.
So many things were running through his mind he didn't have enough time to pluck out one and decipher what it meant by the time Serena was at his side. Glancing up at her words, the cheeky male couldn't bring a smile to his face. Rather, the anger was swapped for pity.
What had he gotten himself into?
Sighing, he gestured to the spot in the cherry red booth in front if him, meaning for her to sit so he could explain. Payne was quick on bringing out a thick slice of chocolate cake, placing it along with a fork and napkin in front of her. Scampering away, the elder brother silently thanked him before quickly spewing out a ray of words.
"Serena," his voice was heavy, soggy with his accent and raspy all over. There was something so calm, so romantic- so heavenly about his simple, lazy tone that made any other noise he made sound wrong, "I just-"
He paused, shaking his head as he fought for words, "I feel like such a dick for leaving the way I did," his lengthy (don't even get me started on his hands, good lord) fingers dug at his mane as he recalled how he abruptly left just before the food got there because he'd gotten a phone call from Payne about Apple. Of course he had to go, didn't want to by all means, but despite how infuriating that blonde girl can be- she was as close as a sister as he could get.
"I hadn't intended on kissing you, and I certainly hadn't planned on ditching you right after," he breathed out, his shimmering foliage of eyes quaking as he stared at her, "It's just, Apple," he was faintly sure he'd told her about his friend's missing step-sister priorly," She came home and Zayn needed me and after how long she'd been gone plus her past, it was an emergency and I never meant to do that to you."
He was too sweet for his own good, heart swollen and hands always there to take. Everyone else was set before him, so when he crushed someone he was instantly on his knees apologizing.
"I just-" he stumbled over his words, his face falling his obnoxiously ginormous hands (those hands, man, ugh) hiding his shame as he whispered in a silky tone.
"I'm just sorry."

Slipping into the seat, Niall had gestured her towards. Serena cast a grateful smile towards Payne when he bought her some cake. Slicing off a small piece on the fork, Serena turned her attention back towards Niall and his luscious locks (fella with hella good hair, am I right?). Pushing the cake into her mouth, Serena began listening to Niall's staggered words, fingers pushing against each other.
Serena wanted to help with his explanation, but how? She could evidently see that something was troubling him, deeply. At the mention of his leaving, Serena felt herself pull away, remembering how she'd been left, abandoned to face two meals only one of which would have been eaten. She hadn't touched any of the food though, she'd paid and left. Heading home she'd had one though on her mind, God, I'm such an idiot.
So, he hadn't meant to kiss her. Serena bit down on her lip, fork poking holes in the sponge of the cake.
Apple, the name rang a faint, distant bell. At least she now had some explanation. It didn't take much for Serena to put it into context with her own mum for her to understand.
Watching his face fall, Serena pushed the cake aside, leaning over the table and taking one of his hands, bigger than hers in a reassuring way, "it's okay, Niall." Serena told him, any anger subsiding quickly although not completely wholly. "We can put that behind us." Us? Was their even a them? Had that been the right thing to say?

Us. God that single word sounded so sweet. It was even better than her touch, nearly. How pathetic was he to be so upset over something he couldn't prevent? Well, he could have- he could have kept his lips to himself rather than kiss a random girl, again. Niall didn't want that, though. He needed to have his lips pressed tight against hers for some reason he couldn't explain, so no, he didn't regret kissing her at all- just the circumstances it had happened under.
Manning up, he sat up straighter and used his free hand to push his (totally hella good) hair out of his chiseled face- his other held still under the weight of hers. It took a moment for his sorrowful green eyes to find her diamond hued ones, but when they did, the words just came flowing. "We can put this behind us- if you're willing. I did you wrong, and I know that, but Serena- I want to make it up to you. That wasn't the first impression I wanted to leave on you."
And this definitely wasn't the best second either.
Nibbling intensely on his chapped bottom lip, he batted his gaze from her to the cake, nearly tempted to ask if she liked it, but decided against it because of the seriousness of the situation.
"I'm sorry," he whispered yet again, meaning it even more as he dared to match her glare- his withering and weak under her upset one.

Man, she could have just leaned across the table and kissed him right then and there possibly with his brother accidentally looking on from somewhere, but as much as she liked it, she never wanted to seem like an easy fish to catch. Not that she wanted to seem like a fish, maybe more of a deer. Watching him push his hair out of his face, Serena felt a faint smile cross her face. "I'm willing," Serena told him, stretching back into the booth but keep her hand on top of his, it was reassuring, the heat of his hand matching hers.
Unable to tear her eyes away from his, Serena asked, "and how do you intend to make it up to me?" A coy and innocent tone matched her question, as her fingers traced a lazy pattern along his knuckles. Following his gaze to the cake, Serena could tell he wanted to know if she liked it, he was easy to read like that, she'd wait for that now.
"Don't be sorry, remember, that's behind us." It hadn't meant to come across as scolding but Serena feared it had.

Thank God. Niall didn't know what he would have done if she wasn't willing to give him a second chance. Breakdown, probably, if he was honest. It was just something with her that made him feel so, so himself. He felt comfortable in his skin, lucky to be alive- the time they were apart? Well, let's just leave it at he was struggling to make it by. Not suicidal, no he wasn't like that, but he just didn't have any motivation. She was his key. Deciding to just move on from the whole grief and misery thing, Niall tried to make a joke out of her teasing statement. Pulling a stunned face, he acted completely baffled and confused at her words, voice reaching a pitch higher than normal as he proclaimed, "Wha- how am going to make it up to you? Isn't the cake enough. No need to get greedy, now Serena." Joking, he was absolutely joking, and he made sure she was aware of that by tossing a hearty chuckle at the end of his little charade. Shaking his head, his hand dove right back into his curly mane as he thought of a legitimate answer as she commanded him to stop apologizing. Nodding, he kept his gaze level with hers, the other hand still firmly under her petite one. Turning it over so his palm was against hers, he curled his fingers around the back of her hand, smiling softly as he did so. Niall's voice fell back into its deep, raspy range, his emerald eyes twinkling as he spoke, "Honestly though, I'll do whatever it takes. Whatever you want, I'll do- just as long as it makes you happy. Also, no more apologizing." Nodding with his words, his chesire grin grew, hand giving hers a light squeeze. Everything would be okay.

Rolling her eyes at his joke, Serena glanced down briefly towards the cake, she would finish it just maybe not now. Suddenly shoveling a load of cake into her mouth seemed like it would kill the moment. Smiling as he squeezed her hand, Serena racked her brain to see if there was anything she wanted Niall to do right at that very moment. She came up with nothing, brain dry of any and all ideas, innovative or basic. Suddenly though, an idea came to her and she moved her attention away from cake and anything else and back to Niall, the boy in front of her. "We should go ice skating!" Serena suggested, tossing him a coy grin, she was used to the feel of skates on her feet and ice beneath her toes but what about Niall? Had he ever been skating before, Serena guessed not, still, he might surprise her. Maybe... (So didn't still that idea from their new music video)

(OHMYGOD I WAS GOING TO SUGGEST THAT BC OF THE VIDEO XD)
A lazy chesire grin hung on his plump lips, eyes the hue of an angry, vibrant moss gem and a calm, summer forest clashing casting a cheeky glare up and down her as her gaze bat to the cake. It was easy to read her thoughts, just as he knew he was an open book to her- they jut worked like that. He figured she didn't want to finish snacking on the delicacy for the sake of not killing the bonding mood, but he really wouldn't have minded. In fact, he'd probably have stole a chunk of it himself while she was occupied with dishing some into the mouth that seemed so familiar to him.
Snapping out of his mini fantasy of indulging in the dessert together, the curly haired boy let his oversized teeth shine through as his lips peeled back into a smile with her suggestion. Iceskating, something he'd done for ages. They had this pond that would freeze over in winter and he'd take Payne out there when they were kids. Often his mother would have joined them, but ever since she passed he hadn't dared to slip on the skates.
With Serena, though, he felt safe, and was willing to dive back into his past for the sake of having a good time with her. His voice low, but eager, he purred, "Yeah, let's do that. What's the worse that could happen?"
So, so many bad things could happen, he didn't even know.

(OHMYGOSH CRAZY)
Noticing his grin at her suggestion, Serena had the sudden feeling that ice skating was not unfamiliar to Niall. A twinge of competitiveness settled in her as a smile drew its way across her face. "Oh, you know, we could fall over and break something vital. Then we'd end up in some medical facility somewhere, you'd meet my Dad, Clara and Payne would probably both be there and chatting; because I know how much you love that. So, that could happen." Serena commented with ease, the list rolling off of her lips. "And trust me, my dad's protective. Nuts and an workaholic but protective."
Letting the words settle in for just a moment, Serena tugged the cake back towards them, cutting some off before holding it up to Niall, "you want some? Gotta get some energy before we go skating." Everything was so easy with him, Serena had never thought that possible.

For a second, his smile fell. It flashed before his eyes: their bodies colliding into each other, his smothering hers as they fell into the ice below, his vision blurs and the next thing he sees is a woman wrapping a bandage around Serena's ankle whilst another nurse checking his vitals and re-situating the harness holding his arm in place, he then feels his lips mold around the words 'I'm sorry', and then suddenly he's being whisked away in an ambulance, his hand stretching out towards her while she babbles on about how much trouble their going to get in, and boy did they- it was like she said, her dad was giving him and earful, but all he could focus on was the blonde's giggles and their siblings conversation. Niall visibly gulped, laughing anxiously as his hand flew to behind his curls- his fingers working at the tensing skin there. Coughing to clear up his throat, he nearly took back the offer, lips moving to suggest doing something safer that wouldn't end with a horrible impression on her father.
Though, the words were never spoken, for the moment his mouth opened, there was a fork being directed his was- and all the boy could do was smirk. With a subtle wink, he felt himself fall back into his flirty, calm manor. All worry washed off, they'd be fine on this date. Right? Right. He didn't focus any longer on what could happen, and put all of his attention on Serena, his mouth parting again as he leaned forward. Held within those emerald orbs were the words unspoken: feed me.
